Bryan Fuller Likes NSWF Hannibal Fanart, Fandom Has A Meltdown

Oct 07, 2020 17:03

The homophobic and puritanical rhetoric being used by "fans" to silence a gay man for queer liking fanart of his own series is utterly indistinguishable from garden variety bigotry you hear from conservative politicians.

Modern fandom is broken. https://t.co/AwkQZTfviz

I love this gif every time I see it. It’s from how I met your mother right? I’ve never wanted to watch that show but this gif makes it tempting.

Imagine being so fucking Internet-damaged that you get this worked up about somebody liking some fanart of their series. Go (socially distance) outside!

People are so dramatic over nothing.

But also, the idea that fandom is uniquely crazy lately is stupid. That's not new. It's evolved with direct lines to creators/actors, but that didn't happen in the last year.

fandom has always been chock full of ridiculousness and toxicity, but i do think the movement from more private spaces like livejournal to mediums like twitter where everything is really public and hard to filter has definitely exacerbated things.

plus the fact that people are now connected to fandom literally 24/7 in ways that weren't always possible - when i was a teen, my fannish engagement with online spaces was forcibly compartmentalized since there were only particular blocks of time that i could easily access it during. these days ppl can literally be plugged into that madness at all hours of the day on their phone and it's easier to get consumed by that and make it a central pillar of your identity, which leads to levels of investment that are downright deranged lmfao

Yes, I agree about Twitter, but like I said, that isn't just in the last little while. People have been commenting on the breakdown of the fourth wall for ages.

Constant online living isn't new either.

it's definitely not new, but it's much more accessible and thus widespread now - being connected to social media 24/7 is pretty much the social norm now
