Am I alone in preferring John Oliver without an audience? I've always felt like his show normally has too many gratuitous, for lack of a better word, laugh lines and he always yells them out and accentuates them more than they're really worth and it detracts from what is otherwise a really expertly crafted show that still contains really sharp humor. Some of the laugh lines still make it into this version of the show and some definitely fall flat just because there's no one around to validate them, but even the ones I normally would have rolled my eyes at still just come off as better without what at times just feels like a laugh track. I feel a little bit similarly about Colbert but not to this extent, and I think Colbert overall works better in his studio/with an audience
I was just thinking the other day that corona is the best thing to happen to all these shows without an audience now. I didnt know how obnoxious an audience is until the blessed quiet. The jokes are funnier when they breeze by.
yeah, it's like the writer's strike all over again (or I guess technically the exact reverse of it) - I just remember Conan in particular being exponentially funnier when left to his own devices
I agree about LWT, IMO John's the only one of the late night guys (out of the ones I watch) whose show has actually improved with the lack of audience. And, I genuinely think that's both down to the format/content being more infotainment that straight up late night and due to his own personal comfort without an audience. I saw him on Colbert, I think, where he was asked about the lack of audience and he basically shrugged and said he didn't care and it was fine, and I think that lack of reliance on the audience has helped him for these at home shows
