I can see why he wouldn’t go too hard. The optics of a white man taking down a black woman aren’t great. Even when that white man is great and the black woman is awful.
I always think of that Drew Gooden video about Lilly Singh where he technically made a ton of points I agreed with but all of them together came across as really harsh in a way that made me uncomfortable
I think part of what made me uncomfortable about the Lilly Singh video was that... there are soooo many "commentary/reaction" videos on youtube that state the exact same points. Like the pile-on is a bit... so her show isn't funny, but it feels really uncomfortable that there's so much focus on it.
I think a lot of those content creators told on themselves by focusing on how much unearned hubris she had thinking her Youtube success would ever translate to real TV. I don't think they were all necessarily *jealous* of her but like, it clearly hit close to home that she was the first out of all of them to "make it" and didn't do so hot
I remember seeing her previews on E! And I thought she seemed really dull/unfunny tbh, speaking as someone who never watched her on YT. Idk if it was a disconnect or what, but....yikes
ha, completely forgot about that. still I think Lilly made a much huger leap into the mainstream than anyone else has* and that ruffled more feathers
*unless you count someone like Emma Chamberlain, which I still wouldn't because even as she's earned significant and unprecedented mainstream attention her primary profession is still very much Youtube, but that's beside the point lol
Yes it's so uncomfortable to me, I keep having to say "Do not recommend" to me on YT. Like I get it, her show isn't great, I was rooting for her but I stopped watching. But it's not the worst thing in the world, I have watched some clips when she interviews people I like and she's gotten better in some more recent ones I've seen.
It's definitely stemming from racism, misogyny, annoyance at her relying on race and PC jokes that they resent, and jealousy. I have no interest in watching a white boy criticize her for 20 minutes. I'm South Asian Canadian like her and while I can point out some things that aren't great about her or her show, I would not be making a 20 minute take-down video. NO ONE ELSE IN THE REAL WORLD CARES but these YTers. It actually makes me sad for her, like her show won't do great in ratings and might get cancelled - the level of YT vitriol is so over the top, they are punishing her for JUST FOR getting this show and rather than for being on the air for like 10 years being unfunny.
mte speaking of people who should've stfu even if they had a point
