i know its easy to say "just cancel it" but so many businesses rely on these cons. im attending a local con on the 21st and 22nd as a vendor and if its cancelled ill be in a horrible financial spot. :/

were people cancelling events like this during H1N1 back in 2008/2009?

Yeah it’s tough :/ Our downtown location almost solely relies on the sales from sxsw and acl. Without them their numbers are abysmal.

i have a convention coming up + a local craft show at my physical store plus i usually throw a store anniversary sale in may. once june hits, its really slow until halloween time, retail is so unpredictable unless you have lots of merch that turns over with the seasons, specialty shops are fucked and the period of time between holidays feels aimless and depressing lol.

i hope that you dont take that bad of a hit :(

Yeah :/ I’m sure a lot of places are like us too and order more, expecting it to sell. (Although our shipments have almost all been delayed too).
I’m kind of already expecting there to be more pressure on us to sell during summer (which is my locations busy time) if the other locations don’t sell.

yeah so many events are getting cancelled bc of this - i work in pr and a lot of my clients have conferences/trade shows to go to in the spring but cancellations/reschedules are coming in left and right. for example the geneva auto show got cancelled but lol one of the programs is still holding panels at a diff location in the same city... like whats the point of trying to keep ppl safe... so dumb. everything should be cancelled for now to keep from spreading. duh.

I heard that some GDC folks are planning on doing similar events too. I get it - the people who can’t get refunds on tickets or hotels are fucked - but this is a public health crisis and we need to put people first.

i hope they cancel. the press conference the mayor held this morning was bullshit, saying something along the lines “there is no evidence to support that our communities would be safer if we canceled sxsw.” wtf!!!
