ONTD Original: A list of Disney's 'Exclusively Gay Moments'

Feb 23, 2020 20:19

With news of Onward having the *sigh* first 'openly gay character' in Disney animated history, we take a look back at the times Disney faked out everyone by pretending to be more inclusive than a giant conglomerate really is 😲

Gay coded villains in the 90s don't quite count, as Disney wasn't touting themselves as models of representation then.

They also lose points (with me) for aggressively straightwashing Scar AND Jafar and removing Shang altogether, I think??? from their respective live-action remakes. BOOO

I watch a lot of movies directed by women and some of those women are lesbians who obviously have no problem with love stories featuring gay characters so it's always surreal to come back to the world of mainstream cinema and see... this (also many straight women also have no problem making films about lesbians and other lgbt characters. It's really more of a mainstream cinema problem).

It's super weird to think Disney was applauding itself for whatever happened in Star Wars the same year that Céline Sciamma was like "Come see my romantic drama I made inspired by my ex-girlfriend that also stars my ex-girlfriend where she and another woman fall in love, have sex and discuss the female gaze in art for two hours".

In addition to Portrait of a Lady on Fire some great films with good representation are Desert Hearts, The Watermelon Woman, Saving Face, and Summertime (so underrated but so lovely!) Also for gay representation Weekend and Moonlight are lovely too.

Weekend was cute

I think I would have loved that movie except I really didn’t like one of the actors

i love the watermelon woman, i'm a sucker for any film that offers meta critique of representational issues/erasure in larger media

We should stop expecting Disney to do anything tbh.
Same cinema different reactions : when I went to see It 2 and Xavier Dolan kissed his boyfriend at the beginning, a lot of people groaned?? I was v. surprised but also not 🙄 (doesn't matter where it was, pretty sure it's international)
And I saw Fantasy Island and there's a guy who's not only Asian but gay!! Not even played for laughs, and pretty sweet. No groans but apart from sex references, there was no kissing so who knows.

I would have been so disappointed if people in my theater had groaned when they kissed in it 2 😔

My theater was almost empty so maybe that helped

I remember seeing frozen and thinking it was two big gay dads lol

-name lgbqt movies-

I think like three years ago I watched a bunch of foreign movies in the gay section of Netflix.

The way he looks-super cute movie about a gay blind teenage boy
Boys-super cute movie about two gay teenage boys!
Seashore-really slow boring but cute movie about two gay teenage boys!

There were a couple others, they were all pretty similar tbh lol but I liked them
