With news of Onward having the *sigh* first 'openly gay character' in Disney animated history, we take a look back at the times Disney faked out everyone by pretending to be more inclusive than a giant conglomerate really is 😲

Gay coded villains in the 90s don't quite count, as Disney wasn't touting themselves as models of representation then.

We should stop expecting Disney to do anything tbh.
Same cinema different reactions : when I went to see It 2 and Xavier Dolan kissed his boyfriend at the beginning, a lot of people groaned?? I was v. surprised but also not 🙄 (doesn't matter where it was, pretty sure it's international)
And I saw Fantasy Island and there's a guy who's not only Asian but gay!! Not even played for laughs, and pretty sweet. No groans but apart from sex references, there was no kissing so who knows.

I would have been so disappointed if people in my theater had groaned when they kissed in it 2 😔

My theater was almost empty so maybe that helped
