First time hearing about this castle but it is always sad when historical sites get destroyed :(

Not to diminish the tragedy, but apparently this was a reconstruction after the first was destroyed in WWII, so hopefully they’ll rebuild again. At least that’s what I read.

In Japanese culture it's very much an accepted part of managing historical sites like this that renewals of the building material and rebuilds where needed don't affect its importance - it's less about needing to have the original 500 year old walls or ceiling than with western sites, it's more about continuity of techniques It's actually even talked about in the World Heritage registration. So while this is definitely a tragedy they'll probably rebuild.

I visited Shuri Castle when I was stationed in Okinawa a few years ago.
