Evan Rachel Wood thinks Academy should overhaul Oscar campaigning, get rid of 'big money'

Is anybody else excited to watch the same 12 people get nominated for oscars this year? 😄

She's right and she should say it.

She isn’t wrong. Oscars have been bought and paid for for decades now. Sometimes a great performance aligns with a great campaign. Once in a great while someone sneaks through solely on merit, but let’s be real, a lot of handshaking and money exchanging make up the lions share of wins over the past 20 some odd years.

I don't believe the Oscars are "bought," as in bribery. The Academy has a certain membership and they have a group think thing going on. We see the sample Oscar ballots from members--some don't even watch the films, they just vote for what their grandson liked or whatever.

Of course a lot of money is spent on campaigning and promo, but that's part of the economy. Money isn't changing hands within the Academy membership.

It is what it is. The top of the food chain as far as film awards go. Then there's the Globes, the SAG awards, the Independent Spirit awards. They're all meant to promote films and get people to buy tickets. None of them are really totally fair, but judging one artist against another isn't going to be equal to start with. It is annoying that they're so narrow-minded with their nominations, though. It's beyond time to see some new faces get nominated.

yeah I don't necessarily think people are literally paying for them. However, just like with any group of people I do think there's a strong sense of groupthink and it eventually ends up becoming a popularity contest which is large part fueled by how well you navigate the campaigning/promo machine.

Probably explains Green Book's win this year.

That and a whole lot of shitty white people feeling good about themselves for voting for a movie that's basically white saviorism.

Yeah there's def a lot of people/films that won that shouldn't have won.

Like I think Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress but SLP shouldn't have been her winning role.

Speaking of Weinstein I did recently watched bekindrewind discuss it regarding the year Nicole Kidman won and Salma Hayek and Renee Zellweger were nominated. All of their films were financed by Miramax but he backed Nicole more for the win.

I watched that video as well and it really brings home why people win over others. I watched Frida and there were something's missing gor me. Like I expected it to be entirely in Spanish and be more into her life and relationships with women. But to know Weinstein had the mandatory woman loving woman kiss because it was hot. . . It hurts my bi/pan soul.

Frida to me was mostly good because of the direction and how they brought to life her painting to the big screen but I agree I also thought that it being in english took a lot from the magic of the film.

I kept thinking that the movie would've probably been better in Spanish over English.

Regarding Frida's personal life, the whole reveal about Harvey forcing them to add girl on girl kissing scene is weird cause would that aspect of her even have been included??? I don't remember there being much about her relationship with women save for 2 scenes. Most of it is her on-n-off relationship with Diego.

I highly doubt Weinstein knew Frida was an actual real life bisexual

I want them to change shit and not give an award to a motherfucka who shouldn't have gotten it because the academy gave it to someone for age, money or etc.
