"The industry will only cast Actors that get the movies ‘Financed’ and it becomes a very small pool very quickly.”

I don't totally get what she means here or the context? Is she just talking about getting a movie financed in general? cause I mean thats kinda always been the thing....a big actor who can draw audiences to a movie that I'm assuming she talking about an indie film is gonna be more favorable business and financially-wise compared to a lesser known actor.

Unless she wants the academy to recognize those lesser known actors for their roles in those indie films.

I think she's saying that's just an excuse that's proven to be untrue time and again.

How's it been proven untrue?

Big budget movies with A listers don't always do well, financially or critically.

Small budget movies with no name actors can do very well, financially or critically.

I don't know, I see what she's saying but I also don't really care? The Oscars have always been this way. The major studios created them to make more hype around their films. It's always been used to hype up big studio films, the fact that "indies" (and lbr only a very select and certain type of indie) are nominated and win is really a more modern occurrence.

I read a Bong Joon-ho interview recently where he referred to the Oscars as a "regional" awards ceremony and that's really all they are. A regional ceremony that's a lot of fun and has a lot of hype but that people take way too seriously. It's not the best of anything and never has been. It's always been a big money game.

Yeah in general all awards are essentially marketing games. It's like how at the grammys, certain performers who people barely heard of gets an opportunity perform during the telecast there's an immediate increases in sell of their albums on itunes and immediate rising on the charts.

That is true about how it's only certain indies, I'm actually thinking of A24 is making strides with their films compared to some other labels lol.

A lot of the Oscars pull is the exclusivity too, it's not easy to win an Oscar and to be counted in the same club as legendary actors is very appealing to people. Honestly I can't blame them, if I was an actress you bet your ass I'd be trying to hustle my way into winning one.

Ugh like when Gwyneth Paltrow won for Shakepeare in Love. Queen Fernanda never stood a chance.

She didn’t lie that some people get nominated all the time (mostly on name alone.) And that it’s all about having the money to run an awards campaign. It would be nice if this wasn’t all predictable and by the time the Oscars roll around we all know who’s winning what.
