I'm listening to the Moulin Rouge cast recording now and ... what. It was always a jukebox musical but this ... this is a jukebox musical on the sort of steroids that make your arm muscles explode. I'm sure it's a great spectacle and I love the leads but I don't know if I could sit through this live :(

I saw the West End production of Company and it was EXCELLENT. While I'm a little sad about some of the original cast not transferring, I don't think most of them would've played well with an American audience so it might be for the best.

Katrina is intriguing casting and Patti is always a highlight. I read that Matt Doyle is rumoured to play Jamie which I think is very bland casting however.

Does anyone know why Satine sings 'Firework' instead of 'One Day I'll Fly Away' in Moulin Rouge?

I heard they had a lot of trouble getting the rights to certain songs to use on Broadway, which is why a couple other songs from the movie didn't make it in, so I'm guessing it might be that same issue. At least I hope so lmao, because I can't imagine why Firework would be their #1 choice here.

*SPOILER* its bc satine's motives are different in the musical - shes not yearning to leave and be an actress, in the musical she regards zidler and the dancers as her family and she needs to keep them protected. I thought it was bc of song rights but the writers addressed in an article that ODIFA was never on the table bc of the characterization change. Firework was a dumb choice tho lol

I'm sure I'd like Moulin Rouge if I saw it live, but the cast recording straight-up sounds like a Glee episode to me, especially Shut Up and Raise Your Glass. There are too many mash-ups going on here with songs that do not fit the emotion of the story well enough, or songs that are just too modern/not iconic enough. I keep catching snippets of songs that make me think, why the fuck didn't they just use THAT song?? like when a tiny bit of I Want To Dance With Somebody came in at the end of Shut Up and Raise Your Glass. That's a much better song than either of the two main songs in this mashup so just.... fucking use I Want To Dance With Somebody????

Also FIREWORK??? It wasn't great as a shallow pop song and the dumb lyrics don't sound any better as an emotional ballad lmao. IDK man, there are some weird song choices happening in here, but I'd still see the show if I had the chance.

I was very underwhelmed by the OBCR. Moulin Rouge on stage is SO much better, I don't know who did the sound editing for the album.

I'm sorry to say that when I saw it, all I could think was how heavily inspired the new arrangement was by Glee and Pitch Perfect. It's visually beautiful and musically tired.
