I used to work with ivy league grads before and I was so self conscious about it, until I had to train these motherfuckers on their jobs. I had to learn it all myself actually, but here I was teaching these mofos whom prob made 3x what I did.

i just feel like the college admissions process is horrible as it is - the classism and elitism that comes with ivies is just another added weight to what already sucks

It feels like at this point I won’t even graduate college with the mistakes I made when I was 18 and didn’t realize my mental health was untreated and at its worst. I owe money to that school and am taking non degree seeking classes at another community college before I pay it off for access to my transcripts but it feels like such a long and hard road :,(

I'm sorry that happened to you. You may want to check and see if your old school has a petition process to drop courses for extenuating circumstances. If you can get the courses retroactively dropped for health reasons, you may not owe the money anymore.

^^YES, I've had classes dropped for health reasons (specifically, mental health reasons) retroactively after the quarter had already ended. I had to withdraw from the entire quarter retroactively but It's definitely something worth looking into. My tuition and fees for that quarter were reversed, I didn't owe back any financial aid grants and the quarter didn't appear on my transcript.

i went back to school and this was my second spring semester but my mental health deteriorated from working 50+ hours a week and struggling from taking this class for a second time and failing, so lmao i’m failing college AGAIN and feel like such a failure.

I'd be more impressed if the list didn't feature so many nepotism kids, a couple of people who were world famous when they applied for school and people who come from extremely well off families. No shit Ellie Kemper went to an Ivy; her family is fucking loaded.

that explains a lot about ellie kemper's success!

Just a counterpoint: I went to school with a lot of Ellie Kemper's cousins (also Kempers), and they all went to pretty good schools (Harvard, Yale, WashU), but they all 'deserved' it on merit-- all extremely bright and smart. They're not a dumb family.

Of course it's easier to get in places, and prepare to get in those places, when you are rich (and easier to pay for it), but you can also get in on merit.

this is fine - no one is suggesting that all ivy league students should be black, muslim, disabled, female, etc

however, the counterpoint to your counterpoint is that there are thousands of kids who would do just as well at an ivy, and be just as successful if we did in fact live in a meritocracy, but who don't stand a chance against a system already loaded in favour of the ellie kempers. individual cases of merit vs pure privilege don't mean a thing imo. it is easier to be bright, smart, and 'deserving' when you have few stressors in your life and a hell of a lot of money behind you.

Here I am thinking about colleges and universities I could have went to back in my youth. I spent a lifetime to figure out and attempted to make sense for a career. I'm depressed and tired, lol. It's ridiculous. WWU was amazing though. At least I got to experience some of what it was like there. Bummer.

Whatever @ Ivy Leagues
