February 15, 2019 After about a dozen release dates changes in the last like two years, 'Alita: Battle Angel' is finally out in theaters, has already made $8.7M on Thursday, and is estimated to make around $36M-$38M. I should note - and no one should be surprised - that this insanity cost $165M-$170M after tax breaks.
Also out is the rom-com 'Isn't it Romantic,' which made $4.4M on Thursday and is expected to gross $20M-$23M this weekend (on a $5M budget, apparently, damn nice). The third new release is the sequel 'Happy Death Day 2U,' which cost pennies to make (well compared to Alita anyway) and $2.7M on Thursday, and is expected to haul $10M-$12M this weekend, on a $6M budget.
The wrestling comedy 'Fighting With My Family' was also released, but very limited this weekend before a huge release next weekend. In 4 theaters in NYC/LA it made $35,000 on Thursday. It'll expand to over 2500 theaters next weekend, going up against 'How to Train Your Dragon 3'.
