Indie Film Release Guide: August 10th [An ONTD Original]

This week in major studio releases, you can check out The Meg or Slender Man. And FYI, If you still have Moviepass, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is finally eligible for viewing. But since not everyone’s into shark attacks, slender men or impossible definitely possible missions, I have assembled this week’s indie releases for your perusal.

Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: August 3rd, July 27th, and July 20th.

Genre: Biography, Comedy, Crime
Plot: Ron Stallworth, an African-American police officer from Colorado, successfully managed to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan and became the head of the local chapter.
What you should know: This was shot on film, which is becoming more and more unusual.

Skate Kitchen

Director: Crystal Moselle
Genre: Drama
Plot: A teenaged skateboarder makes friends with a bunch of other skateboarding girls in New York City.
What you should know: Getting “credit-carded” is when the skateboard lands vertically between your legs, and this happens to the main character in the movie as well as irl to the actress who plays her.
Opens in: NYC, expands to LA next weekend.

A Prayer Before Dawn

Plot: The true story of an English boxer incarcerated in one of Thailand's most notorious prisons as he fights in Muay Thai tournaments to earn his freedom.
What you should know: The film was shot on location in the prison.

What you should know: This is from the same team people that brought you Turbo Kid, the underrated, weird AF movie from a few years ago.

What you should know: This is an update on the Bluebeard tale.

Dog Days

Plot: Follows a group of interconnected people in Los Angeles who are brought together by their lovable canine counterparts.
What you should know: Nina Dobrev’s dog Maverick is one of the dogs that appears in the film. And a bunch of UCB/comedy people show up, too (Adam Pally, Jessica St. Clair, Thomas Lennon, Tig Notaro, etc).
