I feel like this series had a lot of potential but the lead actors' performances seemed kind of...stilted? IDK how else to explain it.

It is pretty somber in tone.

Yeah. For me, it just kind of took me out of the story when Bruhl, Fanning and Evans all spoke in this flat, hushed tone. I'm like 'EMOTE, DAMMIT!!' That said, I've watched all the episodes haha I do enjoy the series. OT...heart eyes for your icon.

I dunno, I think Luke Evans is doing a great job. I find Dakota's speech patterns to be a bit stilted and I'm not sure how I feel about her acting here. I think Laszlo is acted fine but the character is a mess and can be quite unlikable. I dunno if the stilted acting/speech is a time period thing or not, but I still like the show.

I've enjoyed this show and I'm excited to see how it ends.

I've enjoyed it too, I'm excited and dreading the ending. I really hope they renew it and adapt the next book as well, there's a lot of potential here with the setting and characters, they could definitely go on a bit longer.

I've only watched up to episode 3 because I had to finish the book first
The book was ok, didn't completely love it, but I don't like the changes they made in the series. They made John a complete idiot and he and Kreizler don't even seem like they tolerate each other. The relationships between all characters is off (don't even get me started on Roosevelt)
Dakota is surprisingly good in this and i couldnt picture her as Sara at first, when reading the book

Everyone keeps talking about the changes to the book and how they hate them, really makes me want to read the book and see for myself. I heard that Laszlo is more likable in the book whereas in the show he was such an asshole, especially to Sara.

To be fair, he was a bit of an ass to Sara a couple of times in the book, but he wasn't unlikeable

A bit of an ass I can deal with, but slapping her and then never even apologizing for it? The way he kept badgering Sara and John about their personal traumas and then shuts down any attempt of theirs to talk about his? Yeah, I dunno why they decided to make him such an ass for the show. I even found his romance with Mary a tad creepy, so I couldn't get too invested in that.

The ending sequence fucked me up tbh D:

I really hope we get a second season because overall, I love the show sfm!! I'm still pissed about Mary tho >:(

Mary deserved better.

That whole ending sequences, with the sounds as he was cutting into the body and poor Joseph running and hiding (why didn't you run out of there, Joseph???) it was really nerve wrecking. I really hope we do get a second season, I understand there's a second book they can always adapt, so no reason not to.

Yes, the sounds and all the blood were too much. I usually handle gore very well but this time I was legit squirming D: And then there were the scenes with the team at the apartment and the general creepiness of it all... Ugh, such a good sequence!!

I think I read the author is releasing a new book soon too so there is plenty material for a second season. I'd love to revisit this team solving another case and continuing their character development so I hope it happens <3 But no more fridging please!

They also focused on that dead cat way too long for me. I can mostly handle gore, but this episode definitely tested me. And the whole episode was so tense- the team at the apartment, the hide and seek, the ending...

They'd have to introduce new female characters if they want to fridge anyone, since Sara isn't going anywhere. I suppose John's grandmother can die, but other than her, there really aren't any women left. I think there's a new book from Laszlo's perspective? Or was that released already? I dunno. There's also some kind of prequel book that's planned. There's plenty to keep going with, plus it's not that difficult a concept to plan a murder mystery for a season, even if they didn't have the books to borrow from.

Ugh, it had better be the finale-finale, and I say that as a fan. From what I hear, the book's sequel is really bad and not at all like the first one, and I DESPISE this trend of "it's a miniseries [unless it does well, in which case more for $$$$$]!" Looking @ you, BLL. Just respect the story and let it end where it should.

And I can't believe they waited till the damn penultimate episode to let the best actor they've got show off them language skills and do some Srs Acting. Poor Laszlo ;_______;

In general I agree about a mini series should stay a mini series, but since there is a sequel book, I don't see why the show can't continue and adapt that one as well (no, I didn't read either of the books, so I can't judge how bad the sequel is).

We heard Laszlo speak Hungarian, I think, in a previous episode. But this was definitely a shining acting moment for Brühl, whereas till now I found him quite unlikable.
