the argument is that it's ~just a cross and it was easter, plus he supported obama (and hillary? although he's one of those "let's promote love and unity towards trump supporters" guys). but i mean just bc he's not a crazy pro-trump evangelical doesn't meant he's not a conservative christian in general; there's a significant overlap between white evangelicals and trump but some notable conservatives have broken rank too. i think pratt is most likely conservative-ish (and probably complains about political correctness), he's just not batshit crazy.
and putting up a giant cross on public land isn't something that any progressive christian i'm aware of would do lol.
idek what to say to that lol I guess I'm not even sure what my definition of a conservative Christian is and it might be different with Christians in the US. Here in Germany, you're basically a conservative Christian if you go to church or read the bible and you're ultra-conservative if you put up stuff like crosses on your walls or a pic of the Virgin Mary. Erecting a giant cross outside is just ??? to me... def not anything any "religious" person I know would do though tbf I don't think I even know anyone who goes to church except on Christmas. And most don't even go then. Religion posts on here always make me feel like such a heathen lol
Thank you so much for reply, learning more in-depth about how Christianity is practiced/viewed in the US was fascinating! *It's very difficult to understand the diversity of religion (and also how widespread it is) in the US but this helped me make sense of it a little bit. The thing about it being like a buffet is probably true everywhere, people take the stuff they like and leave out all the rest.
Yeah, all of the lefty Christians I know (and I actually know quite a few) are much more low-key about their faith. Like maybe they post about their church choir practices on Facebook and that's the most in-your-face it gets lol
yeah i follow the christian culture wars on twitter lol so i know a lot of more progressive christians there, plus a bunch of friends on facebook. erecting a giant cross on public land is something that would disgust them with how ostentatious it is.
sadly i have a few conservative southern baptist friends on facebook who'd probably think this is fine and dandy lol.
lol that twitter stuff sounds fascinating. I recently discovered Jen Hatmaker and fell down a rabbithole reading about all the backlash for her pro-LGBT stuff.
the way she was treated was disgusting. also the whole larycia hawkins scandal at wheaton bc she dared to show solidarity with muslims. and the way julie rodgers was tossed aside by conservatives when she made the switch from side b to side a. and if you mention rachel held evans' name around conservative circles and people practically start frothing at the mouth.
The Larycia Hawkins stuff should be easier to google because it made a lot of the big news media.
Rachel Held Evans is tougher because there's no one big incident. Conservative Christians just hate her and will discount anything she says because she's a dirty liberal Christian sell-out who supports killing babies (RHE identifies as pro-life but supported HRC because she believes that Democratic policies do more to make abortion unnecessary than Republican policies do). But here are a couple of articles for you:
oop, apparently I had not only read that wapo article on RHE but had it bookmarked cause it's coming up starred on my browser lol
I'm reading your metafilter post rn and it's fascinating, ty for sharing. I had not heard of Julie Rodgers before. One of the people I became exposed to during the Hatmaker debacle was Rosaria Butterfield and it seems like people are OBSESSED with the narrative of gay people being able to just find their heterosexuality through Christ and it depressed the hell out of me.
Oh my fucking god, I HATE Rosaria Butterfield. The thing is, she refers to herself as a former lesbian but in her first book she acknowledged having been previously attracted to men, so it's more that she's a bisexual who happened to marry a man. But being a bisexual who married a man doesn't sound as revolutionary as being a "former lesbian" who married a man, and it doesn't further the ex-gay agenda, so former lesbian it is! She's a prime example of how bisexual erasure perpetuates harmful ex-gay narratives
( ... )
omg I had no idea she had publicly previously IDed as bisexual/someone attracted to men but that's honestly what I had to assume was her case just based on the narrative she was pushing. So many people on facebook were sharing her response post to Jen + Brandon as like a "See? Look at this former lesbian! People just need to find Jesus!" story and I just wanted to scream "DO YOU GUYS NOT KNOW ANY GAY PEOPLE IRL??? BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS..."
I was raised in an agnostic household and am currently reading through the bible for the first time and it is an EXPERIENCE.
I don't think she ever IDed as bisexual in that she never claimed the label, but yep, she acknowledged being attracted to men in her first book (about her conversion to Christianity lol)...but people never pick up on that, they just latch on to "former lesbian." I wonder where all the ontders saying that we should respect whatever labels people choose for themselves and not gatekeep would say in this situation when it's clearly being used to promote harmful anti-gay policy.
