I'm an atheist who hates institutionalized religion and I have no time for Christianity. But while Scientology should be outlawed, you can't punish legitimate participants of faith.
Maybe you don't know much about what Scientology actually does other than that it has wacky stories.
...wow at this comment and people responding to it. Whilst certain extremist sects of mainstream religions like Christianity have cult-ish aspects that are awful, Scientology is actually a modern institution built for the purpose of enslaving people through their altruism (they're told that they're gonna help make the world a better place).
You can try comparing them, but I've never heard of a Christian church asking its parishioners to pay $20,000 to get the next gospel (in this day and age). Or following them around and hiring private eyes to harass and stalk them and verbally abuse them on the street because they left said religion and are critical of it.
Come on man...I know it's cool and edgy on ONTD to compare apples and oranges but...come on. Logic must apply at some point.
But people KNOW THAT. People know that Scientology are creepy as fuck. Therefore, people who aren't scientologists give them and their opinions a wide berth.
Christians, on the other hand, have free reign to wander up to parliament/the senate/whatever and say "hey, let's make this thing into a law!". That's terrifying to me. The influence of Christians on law (and therefore the lives of normal people) frightens me immeasurably more than a bunch of alien worshipers who con rich people into thinking that money is 42.
Dude, I always call out the dumbasses who say shit like "all religions are cults lolololol" in Scientology posts, but that's not what the OC is saying. She's just saying that Christians scare her more because they have more power, and that's legit IMO. Yes, Scientology was created for the express purpose of exploiting its members and it's a bona fide cult, but they're not the ones dictating policy for the rest of us heathens the way Christians are. We have YEC Christians pushing for creationism to be taught in schools, the criminalization of homosexuality because God made Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve, etc. Scientology is fucking batshit and abusive but if you are not part of the cult and have no close friends/relatives who are members (which lbr is most of us), its effect on your life is minimal.... which is more than I can say for theologically conservative Christianity.
I see what you're saying. I interpreted it as her talking about it in generalist terms but you're right. And the thing is I know about all you said but didn't even factor it. I'm an idiot.
i know people have said that this isn't proof that he's a conservative christian but tbh none of the progressive christians i know are into ostentatious displays like this. i mean idt chris pratt is like a pro-trump evangelical or anything and politics wise iirc he leans D but i don't think he's a particularly progressive dude either.
How can people argue that this is not super conservative? lol I don't even know any conservative Christians irl (let alone moderate omg) who would do such a thing bc it's crazy. Like wtf.

(This is not a defense of organised religion).
