Stars join fight to end Yulin Dog (Murder) Festival

Stars have voiced support for the Stop Yulin Forever Campaign. This brings awareness to the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin China . According to supporter Ricky Gervais "The dogs are tortured to 'make the meat tastier.' They are also skinned and boiled alive. It's not a food festival. It's Hell."

This is so awful, I'm legit going to cry.

Kinda OT but here in Kentucky, Northern Kentucky to be specific, tons of peoples dogs are being stolen. Animal control is pretty certain its dog fighters stealing the dogs to be used for their pitbulls to train their fighting on. Absolutely horrifying, peoples babies being stolen from their yards. I would just love to torture all these assholes who harm innocent little animals. See how they like it.

why, why is it still 2016 and there are things like this going on, why are there straight festivals where people apparently torture and skin alive animals to feast on their flesh, WHY IS IT 2016 AND PEOPLE KIDNAP DOGS TO ATTACK EACH OTHER FOR MONEY.

oh my god, I didn't even know this was a thing, this is HORRIFYING, and yes, I do get that we should respect other cultures etc, but please please please there are so many other sources of protein but oh god, what do I know I'm a vegetarian to begin with because people kept taking me to meat markets when I was younger I'm sorry I'm a little incoherent I JUST!!!

I just said this upthread, but I think it bears repeating.
I feel the same way you do about not wanting to disrespect other cultures, but I don't think this situation is equivalent to say, PETA trying to stop Native American groups hunting seals. As a vegan, I don't support PETA in that at all.
But we wouldn't even know about this if it weren't for the work of Chinese animal rights activists. There is a long history of animals rights activism in China. We wouldn't have ever heard about Yulin if it weren't for Chinese activists trying to garner international support in their fight to end this. So, at least by my way of viewing things, we are helping to support some very brave Chinese people by supporting this campaign.

Skinned and boiled alive is disgraceful but I think there's still a cognitive dissonance when it comes to eating certain meats vs. other meats. I realize eating meat is bad in almost all situations but I don't know...it has been very difficult to cut it out completely. I feel bad every time I have a pork chop or any sizable piece of meat. It's weird because I obviously didn't always feel this way my whole life and it has been difficult to deal with as I become more self-aware.

I think so too. Why are certain meats off limits and others aren't.
