Here's a list of my top 5 favorite movies of the year, and A little blurb about why. Spoilers within, be warned
5. Shutter Island
I love a good mystery. Not long into Shutter Island you realize that it's more than that. There is an ominous feel that permeates the whole movie, like you just know something very bad could happen at any second. Leonardo Dicaprio plays US Marshall Teddy Daniels sent to an Island in Boston Harbor that houses and institution for the criminally insane. Of course nothing on this Island is what it appears, and the ending was a source of great debate between my friends and me.

I am a huge ballet fan, and the trailer for Black Swan combines ballet with one of my other favorite things, horror. But I wouldn't really call the Black Swan a horror movie, it's definitely a psychological thriller. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are great, they did a lot of their own dancing and they were beautiful at it. Barbara Hersey plays Natalie's mother in the movie and she quickly lets her undercurrent of crazy stage mother come out in a gloriously creepy way.
3. The Deathly Hallows, Part 1
As a Harry Potter fan who has been disappointed by the content of the movies in the past, I feel like I couldn't have asked for more with DH part 1. The acting as improved even from the last movie most notably, in my opinion, from Emma Watson. It was shot beautifully, the sets and locations are beautiful, it was scary and touching in all of the right places. Most importantly it made me excited for part 2.
2. Inception
This movie blew me away, plain and simple. It was one of the most visually stunning, mind-bending, amazingly plotted, wonderfully acted movies that I've seen in a long time. It was thrilling from start to finish. Hans Zimmer's score was a gloriously epic and the cast was perfect. Another movie with an ending that will have you talking for days.
1. The Social Network
This movie is sneaky. You wonder 'what could possibly be so entertaining about a movie about Facebook?' and until you're sitting in the theater watching it you don't really know. It sneaks up on you, and before you're halfway into the movie you realize...holy shit this is kind of amazing. The script is biting, fast-paced, and brilliant. It plays like a courtroom drama and a coming of age story all at the same time. Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg plays just this side of Aspergers. Andrew Garfield who plays Zuckerberg's best friend/business partner Eduardo Saverin plays all warmth where Mark Zuckerberg is cold. You genuinely feel for him when Eduardo is seemingly screwed out of his own company by his supposed best friend.
For me, the more I thought about this movie the more I realized how great it was. To make a movie about Facebook, while Facebook is at it's height of popularity is genius. It makes you think about everything that went into the creation of a website that most people visit every day. Of course, it's just a movie, no one can say what really happened except the people that were there. Take your initial opinions about what played out on screen, who was right and who was wrong, and sit on them for a while. I guarantee you'll find it easy to think from both sides of the deposition table and you might end up changing your mind.
