My mom's latest mission is to get me to stop eating sushi. The following conversation just took place over the phone.

I just read an essay in the London Review of Books by John Sturrock in favor of faking one's knowledge of books. It's ok, he says, to talk about books you haven't read. In fact, he goes on to argue that it isn't necessary to read things at all--why limit the bounty of literature into Books You've Read and Books You've Not Read ( Read more... )

Reading The Slow Man by Coetzee.  Drago, this young cool thing, asks Paul Rayment, an aging amputee, whether or not he likes anything new.  Paul tries to explain that he has given up on newness--that once he was new, but since then, he has been overtaken by time.  And this, I agree, is how it goes: one becomes overtaken by time.  One is no longer ( Read more... )
