One can choose.

Reading The Slow Man by Coetzee.  Drago, this young cool thing, asks Paul Rayment, an aging amputee, whether or not he likes anything new.  Paul tries to explain that he has given up on newness--that once he was new, but since then, he has been overtaken by time.  And this, I agree, is how it goes: one becomes overtaken by time.  One is no longer able to be the flashy, exuberant self one used to be.  Nostalgia is the only remaining option.

But Drago responds, "One can choose."  And I'm reminded that one can choose not to be overtaken by time.  Whether or not this will be a clarion call (doubtful) for my own mental lethargy remains to be seen.
