Oh goodness, you are brilliant. I've been brooding about this lately -- how so many people say such hurtful things all the time about sex, or about people who like sex, or about people who like sex in "weird" ways. So of course I've been internalizing this sort of thing for my entire life, and only in the past few months have I even begun to grasp at the extent of the silencing that goes on about sexuality. I mean, even some of my closest friends (who are liberal in every other way) will say things about sex or sexuality that are, to me, the verbal equivalent of being shoved roughly out the door. And the worst thing is that I don't have any backup -- at least it's an obvious tenet of Liberalism that Being Gay Is Okay, and we have liberal politicians championing gay rights -- but when it comes to being kinky, which is as much a part of my sexuality as the fact that I sleep with women, I'm too paralyzed by ingrained fear that I can't even tell anyone (and of course I don't have any assurance that otherwise liberal people won't be ( ... )
