So, Courtney’s wedding shindig was this weekend, and I attended. It was pretty groovy, good food, the folks were nice. I’ve gotten so used, living in heavily-segregated West Virginia, to being surrounded by nothing but white folks that it was nice to be one of only two white men present. Everyone else was black or Asian, or some mix of those with ( Read more... )

Absinthe just fucks you up because it's pretty strong. It's like any other sort of cocktail when you add the water.

The wormwood can occasionally build up in the body, which is why if you drank it every every day, it might make you a touch off, but so much is needed that it's pretty unlikely.

Most of the folks who went "crazy" from absinthe in the 1900s. Went crazy from that plus morphine, opium, cocaine, and so on.

I'm still not really sure what wormwood even is. Is it a particular kind of wood, or just wood that bad things have happened to? And is it really poisonous? 'Cause you all the time hear that thing are poisonous, that aren't.

I hear that it's legal in more places now because it no longer contains wormwood, which was the bit that ate holes in people's brains.

Were you really only one of two white men? Hmm, probably pretty close to that. I hadn't thought about it. I can think of my dad (who does tend to be pretty brown, but who qualifies as Caucasian), Mike's dad, my old boss Marshall, Kathy's husband Lee and you. I think Kayleen's fiance was Hispanic or Native American. Still, that's a pretty low number considering the number of people who were in and out of there. As I've said, that's where I spend my holidays so they're just family to me.

I wish I could remember all the info on that from the documentary I watched. They addressed the wormwood thing specifically, but that information has gone straight outta my head.
I guess I was thinking later in the day. You yourself pointed out to me at one point that your dad and I were the only white men...all the others left pretty early. I guess that's what I was thinking.
