Opening Night of Cactus Flower

Mar 01, 2013 00:42

Just got home from the Opening Night performance of Cactus Flower - and it went really well. I'm really happy with it. The audience was laughing, the scenes went smoothly, and I think everyone just felt really exhilarated to start with such a great night! (I'm probably going to crash soon, but right now I'm still a bit wired ( Read more... )

Hmm. I can understand where she's coming from. I used to suffer badly from this (though I FORCED myself to try out new things, ask questions etc. :D so I guess that's where we differ.)

I think she feels nervous that she might fail at something. Reassure her it's alright to make mistakes and it's better to try and learn new things than remain "safe" and not fulfill her obligations! Because this is just the beginning, if she can't handle this, in life later on, she'd have even bigger problems.

Could you run her through the process again and have her take notes for herself? Or you can make a print-out for her for the cash register process. I used to work retail and the first few weeks I relied on a cheat sheet, hahaha.

What are collections? If they involve less front-line work it might make it easier. It sounds like she's not just introverted, but might have social anxiety.

But I guess, you need to make it clear that she needs to ask questions if she's unclear about anything and that it is completely okay to do so.

Collections would involve less dealing with the public. It's working with our artifact collection and inputting new acquisitions. My fear is that my boss won't let her work there because she's been asked to do several jobs similar to it and either doesn't do them or will only do half and then leave them. And I feel so bad for her because I think she's doing this because she's scared to ask us questions, but my boss won't see it that way. My boss has her own form of social awkwardness in being very blunt and not very sensitive. So, as the middle person, I've been trying to find ways I can help and shelter her from the worse of the bosses wrath - because that's only going to close her up even more ( ... )

Yeah, the serious thing is what I am a bit worried about. Right now my boss is on holidays, and I'm (I think) pretty good for keeping the attitude light and fun. But my boss has her own social awkwardness and she's blunt and insensitive and her jokes can come across as putting you down. I have pretty thick skin, between being oblivious half the time and working in theatre, you learn to roll with the punches - but even I had a hard time the first few months with my boss. So I am kind of worried about that ( ... )
