[For Steve]

The island was a hell of a lot more inexplicable than the Pattern, Olivia had begun to find out. So many people taken from their homes, so many names on council lists of those around, those gone, those lost. It drove her to studying everything she could get her hands on, to looking around and hiking, searching and hoping for any clue that might ( Read more... )

I've been on the island for four days, though I've only been conscious for the majority of two of them. I can't remember ever sleeping so much. Today, though, I woke up early, and for lack of anything else to do, began to read.

Burr, by Gore Vidal, was published in 1973, but it reads like something written when I was a boy. It is a... very interesting look at events in the life of Aaron Burr with what seems like a skewed perspective of his peers, but one with evidence. I've been engrossed in it and am more than halfway through- it's almost enough to prevent me from being painfully aware of having not moved in days. "Ah, stuck in a hospital bed," she said with a nod of familiarity. "I can sympathize with you there."

The clinic looked far from a hospital, especially the way it opened up into the lab right next door, but that comforted Olivia, in a way. She'd spent to much time in hospital beds or strapped to gurneys over the past year alone; having it be so impersonal and open to the public seemed a plus for the moment.

She walked over, smile still on her face as she began applying the lotion to her other arm. "You're quite infamous, you know."

I slip the strip of gauze I've been using as a proper bookmark between the pages and set the huge volume aside, offering her my full attention. My eyebrows quirk up and together a little at the comment, not entirely certain how to take it, although the smile would indicate it's largely teasing.

I hope it is, at any rate.

"Oh? That didn't take long."

"From what I've gathered in my short time here," and she'd done a lot of gathering, incapable of doing anything else but looking for answers those first few days, "not everybody shows up under the circumstances you did."

She cocked her head to the side, and held out a hand when she reached his bedside. "Olivia Dunham."
