Reading List?

Aug 07, 2012 04:26

I'm making a Want-To-Read book list for books to purchase when we get settled into the new house. My books are packed and won't be out the boxes for a while. It's so strange to see empty bookshelves. Well, they aren't that empty. There are boxes on them. >_>;

I've been reading mostly Mass Effect fanfiction lately, and( Oops. ME fanfiction rant. )

reading, fenris, gaming, anders, socially inept, writing, rant, evil power-hungry cow, dragon age, mass effect, books, spoilers, life is cheese, use. all. the. tags., science fiction, no life, fic: redundant, i'm moving damn it, fantasy

LJ ate my comment. O.@ But that's okay. Had a question about Jeannette Walls then remembered there's Google. *facepalm*

Anyway, thanks! :)

Coming back after work to voice some thoughts on fanfic...

Unless the writing is of such high quality that I'm willing to stick it out, I usually click the back button when I come across a fic that hasn't been researched really well. Or, if the fic shows promise, I leave a review pointing out errors in the research.

But as for the overall quality... yeah, I do get tired of sifting through the piles of Shakarian, Shoker, Shali*, and Shiara*. The few times I've clicked on gen fics, they haven't been very good at all, or, like that long one about Garrus's time on Omega, become so long and meandering that I simply stopped caring.

That being said, I do still enjoy finding fShenko fics and luckily, there are plenty of those and so I'm under no obligation to read the crappy ones.

metaraymek's comment below about being sick of Shenko + baby fics made me feel a little guilty, to be honest, because I wrote one and I really like it and that made me feel... shallow I think? But I will say that I think mine was the first - or at least one of the very ( ... )

To clarify, I'm more tired of the ones that kind of handwave away the endings of ME3. As in, 'It was all a dream, everyone lived happily ever after'. I can make exceptions for babyfic stories written before ME3, though, since no one knew how ME3 was ultimately going to end.

And the babyfic thing does extend to Shepard and Liara, which I neglected to mention in my comment. Looking back on it, there's probably been more Shepard/Liara babyfic than Shenko. So, I apologize for my short-sighted/acerbic tone about the topic and if I was singling out Shenko in particular.

Oh, 'Interregnum'? Yeah, that story was good, but I think the author went on longer than they should have with that one.

I read Rivers of London recently by Ben Aaronovich and quite liked it. It's nice to read some urban fantasy that's really quite British; it's basically a cop novel but with wizards. "If Harry Potter grew up and joined the Fuzz" is what one of the quotes on the back says.

I've also been reading Peter Temple; good, solid Australian crime novels, but only read if you're interested in crime novels.

Haven't read crime novels in ages. Thanks!

Dragon Age is one of those series where I've grown to really dislike it on a visceral level (DA2 is so hopeless to the point where I wonder if they wanted to see how bad they could make it on purpose. As I've said before, it makes Fallout 3 look like a happy dream land), but I enjoy some of the characters (namely Sebastian, Fenris, and Aveline). It's like I want to rescue them from a bad story and bad writing, lmao.

As for ME fan fic, yeah, what's up with that? The recs page on TV Tropes now has a bunch of shlock and they suck the dick of certain authors who admittedly are not that good at all. It's p. sad when a horrible self-insert fic gets more glowing praise than popehippo's beautiful and truly original fan fic (I know 'original fan fic' is an oxymoron, but bear with me here) about the salarian and his asari step-daughter from Illium ( ... )

That headcanon sounds like the DA version of the ME3 Indoctrination Theory. heh But it makes it easier to swallow in the DA series or at least DAII. I doubt they'll go that direction, but that's an interesting perspective.

It's good that you really like DAII. It is an enjoyable way to expand the lore of the series. I think I'm more irritated with Anders and the fact that he's well-written enough that I can rage at him instead of Bioware for creating him in the first place ( ... )
