Real world issues and comics

Given worrisome trends I feel like I had to exercise an extreme amount of restraint not to go off on certain posters at a particular comic community who felt like sharing their less than favorable thoughts on abortion. Oh, it was relevant to the comic scans, a character had an abortion (a rarity in and of itself in the comic world), and all things ( Read more... )

Yeah, considering some of the comments there, I'm kinda surprised it hasn't exploded. It might still, by at this rate, I doubt it.

More people have weighed in since I posted, so there's still some potential for an explosion. I'm not hoping for one, I don't think the mods deserve the hassle, plus I worry about how the discussion could make women who have chosen to end their pregnancy feel (not to mention any other potentially triggering aspects of these types of conversations), I'm just surprised it has remained so low key.

I really don't understand why people are anti-choice. It makes no sense.

No one is saying that you must have an abortion. No one is saying that anybody must have an abortion. We are just saying that, IF you don't want to carry on a pregnancy, you shouldn't be forced to do it against your will. That's all. You can have a dozen kids if you like. Best wishes, go you!

Yet anti-choicers (I'll call them pro-life when they stop opposing universal health care and claiming that gravely sick people only deserve life-saving treatment if they can pay for it) act as if pro-choicers were stalkers who follow happily pregnant women around to drag them kicking and screaming to abortion clinics.

I can understand why people may feel the way they do about abortion if they feel it's 'murder' and that human life must be preserved (I disagree, but I understand). The thing is, as you mentioned, they're seldom consistent about being 'pro-life' or pro family. As the late George Carlin said, 'they'll do anything for the unborn, but once you're born you're on your own.'

I don't know if you've ever heard his stand up routine about 'Pro Life, Abortion, And The Sanctity Of Life,' but it's pretty good. WARNING for crude language and a reference to the Catholic sexual abuse scandals.
