Tomorrow's (read: today) Spirit Day to remember the teens who have committed suicide due to being bullied about being gay, and as a general day of gay awareness and acceptance. Wear purple, or make a purple ribbon because of it. If any of you guys could do that, it would be really awesome ( Read more... )

various gay, lesbian, and LGBT supporters (some of whom are famous) get in front of a camera and talk about growing up as a gay person and how they were treated/how their parents reacted etc. Some of them even have kids or are in a happy, long term relationship. They just talk about their personal hardships and how far they've come, proving that even if someone dislikes you because of your orientation, doesn't mean that life can't work out for you. It gives people hope, and shows that you don't need to end your life, because life will pick up. It's really very sweet

More so that they blatantly make fun of/belittle it which is just upsetting :\

Well the purple is also a way of honoring those who have passed due to feeling that there is too much hatred. And really, it might seem like an obvious thing to do but that's what people are going for. Something small that people can do that, once done by several, becomes a message in and of itself. It's a silent message even if it's obvious. And I do agree, though, that we need to do a lot more than just that, since it's easy to slap on a shirt. But I do like any small movement, and don't appreciate the people acting like assholes over it. It's like, participate or don't, but don't make fun/ be obnoxious to the people who are doing it.

Fair enough. Someone did bring up the point that just anyone can slap on a shirt and think they are "helping" but I really think it's more than just wearing the purple. It's getting people to be aware. I would probably think it strange that all of a sudden everyone is wearing purple, and if we can get one person to ask and get one person informed, we've done our jobs. Since even getting one person to wonder what's going on, and to be aware of the prejudice is a step in the right direction, even if those around us are just doing to follow a "trend." I think it's still a pretty good step, if a small one ( ... )

Thank you. I agree with everything you said.
I'm appalled by the lack of support by some people and the blatantly clear making fun of a SERIOUS campaign. I'm disgusted by people putting IT GET BETTER over top of CARTOON/VIDEO GAME characters. Its not meant to be funny. So what the fuck is your problem, why... are those people DOING that... ugh.

What bothers me more than people posting those memes to hurt are the people reblogging it thinking that it's funny and not offensive. I don't see them as assholes for being unaware, but I find it SAD they are unaware and just goes to show these movements are important to educate EVERYONE even the people who are unintentionally being harmful. They don't realize what they are supporting by encouraging these memes

I am going to just PAINT MYSELF PURPLE and run around naked like that all day. seriously. fuck people who don't support this. it's a small movement, yes, but all great journeys begin with a single step, and that's what people are doing. I really, really hope some peoples' responses to this (ie their negativity, making jokes and a "meme" out of everything) lets everyone with a brain realize how ridiculous these people are.

SO I WILL BE IN PURPLE SINCE I AM THE GAYEST SUPERHERO VIKING HUSBAND AND YOU ARE MY BEAUTIFUL TROPHY WIFE ♥

Some people just think about the wars we fought to get freedom. They conveniently forget the effectiveness if Ghandi and Martin Luthor King. It's sad really. SO YES JUST DUMP PURPLE ALL OVER YOUR BODY.

And people also CONVENIENTLY FORGET how memes are also created to hurt and offend (like the stupid 9/11 memes). I just wish people would stop and think sometimes.

BEST BIG GAY VIKING HUSBAND ♥

I think people are just too cynical and so they don't want to bother. They forget that the apathy they display is just as harmful when trying to get a statement out as the hate they are fighting against
