This picture was inspired by Fernwithy's "Marauder's Roost." It takes place right after Victoire Apparates to Teddy's island. (I keep hearing the Irish guy from Braveheart: "It's my island!")
At the risk of freaking you out...soonest_mendedSeptember 14 2007, 05:01:37 UTC
I lurk over at Fernwithy's LJ and found you through her link, so I didn't *quite* just drop in off the street. I do have a couple of things to mention:
1. Good grief, your lineart is gorgeous. Cloud curlicues, the boldness of the inking on Teddy-hawk, the skill in shaping and drawing-- I applaud you.
2. Colored pencils have a couple of tricks to them, some of which I'm very familiar with and some of which I'm less familiar with, but can point you toward, if you're interested in any of them.
3. Did I mention how gorgeous your lineart is? Holy goo.

Hurrah! I dearly love inking too, especially when it's done well-- not just a quick scratch over pencil lines, as is so common nowadays, but this kind of inking (with its variable line thickness and attention to foreground vs. background
( ... )
excellent tips!obsfuscationSeptember 18 2007, 14:46:03 UTC
Thank you for the tips! I will definitely try those out. I'm just not as comfortable with colored pencil- which seems like a great reason to try and use them more, actually.
Chemically breaking the wax sounds really interesting. Part of me thinks, though, that if you're using colored pencils, you might want them to look like, you know, colored pencils. :)
I hope we get to see the next phase in the tablet landscape. :)
Nonsense, I think you did very very well with the coloured pencils. The colour gradations on the hawk wings are really quite excellent, and I like the way you use the pencil strokes on the grass. The sea is, I think, the only thing that hasn't turned out well, and who cares about that when everything else works?
Thank you. That makes me feel better about it. The sea ended up looking too Meditteranean at first, so I tried to make it darker and more Orkney-ish. Oh, well. But hopefully the eye is drawn more towards the top of the picture anyway.

I would absolutely appreciate any tips you could give me about colored pencils. I don't use them often, and I could really tell that. :)
And thanks for coming here. I'm not freaked out at all; I like concrit and I really like pointers. :)
