I'm sure most of students would share your sentiments about Shakespeare. However, Shakespeare is taught because he's the first great English poet and playwright, and is argued to be the greatest English poet and playwright. And they have to teach some of the classics, so most opt for Shakespeare because the themes and ideas he used appear even in modern day fiction. The idea of forbidden love, fate, love, strange circumstances... All those themes and character types he popularized appear in just about every book since his time ( ... )

I agree, he is good but to me, he doesn't seem that great. I don't know. I have to think there are more plays out there that appeal more to students than Shakespeare.
