Kyo felt someone shaking him gently from his sleep, calling his name softly. He opened his eyes to be met with blurry vision, making the person hovering over him a little less than a blob of colors. He rubbed his eyes trying to clear his vision. Taking a second look he could see it was him. It was him! Kyo shot up on bed, his bed, he was in his room. Before he could say anything the man held his index finger up to his lips.
“Shh baby, they'll hear us.” The man grabbed a hold of Kyo's hand, urging him to get out of bed. “Hurry, get dressed. We gotta leave.” He whispered.
Kyo was utterly confused, who was he talking about? Kyo couldn't understand at that moment, but he did as he was told and quickly got dressed.
The man grabbed his hand once more. “Kyo, whatever you do, don't let go of my hand okay?”
Kyo shook his head yes.
“Good, just stay close to me and I won't let anything happen to you.” The man leaned down and kissed him. “I love you.”
Kyo couldn't do anything but stare back at him. The man gave a faint smile and lead Kyo through the house to the front door. With one hand on the doorknob and the other wrapped tightly around Kyo's, the man gave him one more look before opening the door. “Now remember, keep a hold of my hand.” And with that the door was opened to a view of mass chaos. A stampede of women and men pushing each other out of the way trying to keep out of reach of the mindless beings running after them, wanting to make a meal out of their flesh.
The man snapped Kyo out of his trance when he tugged him forward by the hand. Kyo followed him as he snaked through a few people on the sidewalk who were in shock. There was a few of the faster zombies spotted through the front of the crowd, while most of them took up the end. The man started running along the stampede tugging Kyo behind. One of the faster zombies took target on them. It was so close Kyo could hear it's snarls and grunts over all the frantic screaming and crying going on around him. He turned his head to see it, almost face to face. Kyo let out a horrific scream, stumbling and then falling. The zombie was on top of him, Kyo was trying to push it off by the shoulders but only succeeded in keeping it from biting him. Suddenly the zombie was kicked off, Kyo looked up to see him fighting with the zombie now. Instincts kicking in, he got up and ran. Kyo hadn't even realized he had left his lover behind until he noticed his empty hand. He looked back in time to see his disappearing face. Kyo couldn't hear anything other than the ringing in his ears, he couldn't even hear himself shouting his lovers name. Soon everything became dark.

Kyo let out a gasp as he awoken from his nightmare, he was drenched in sweat. He was sitting in the corner of the room by the window. There was strands of dim light coming through the curtains. When had he fallen asleep? He doesn't remember. Doing a fast glance over at Shinya, who was still asleep, Kyo stood up and checked out the window. The bright light of the day slightly stinging his brown orbs. He couldn't see anything. He sat back and glanced at Shinya again before running his hands over his face and into his raven colored hair locking his fingers around the black mess.
“Why did I let go?” Kyo hissed at himself through clenched teeth and closed eyes as he banged his head against the wall behind him making a loud thud, startling Shinya awake.
“What is it?” Shinya quickly asked setting up on his knees and looking around until he spotted Kyo in his pained state. “Kyo? What's wrong? Are we surrounded by zombies?”
Kyo shook his head no without changing his expression or relieving his hair.
“Then what's wrong?” The younger man asked crawling over to him.
“Nothing Shinya.” Kyo answered releasing all his tense muscles.
Shinya looked out the window. “So what do we do now?”
Kyo glanced at the window again and then at the small bag that carried their food and water that they received the night prior. “Are you hungry?” He asked pointing to the bag.
Shinya shook his head yes and handed the bag over to the older male.
They were given two unopened plastic water bottles and two cheese sandwiches, Kyo divided it between them. Not really having an appetite Kyo took a few drinks of water, to get rid of the cotton mouth he received from sleeping, and tossed his sandwich towards Shinya.
“Here, you can have mine.” He said standing up.
“Aren't you going to eat it? Where are you going?” Shinya asked eyes following Kyo as he walked towards the door.
“You eat it. I'm going to go check the bathroom and kitchen. Stay here, and I mean it this time Shinya, stay.” Kyo pushed the dresser away from the door.
He peeped his head outside the door looking both ways and listening for any signs of any intruder. Once he was sure the coast was clear he walked into the hallway closing the bedroom door behind him. He walked down the hallway to the bathroom, he turned the faucet on in the sink to check the water. To his surprise it was running, just barely but enough. After relieving himself of bodily functions Kyo made his way down stares to the kitchen. He looked through the cabinets and the pantries for nonperishable foods. He grabbed a box and started filling it with cans of soup, crackers, and bottles of water. Once he had all that he could carry he started back up the steps to the room where Shinya was. Kyo nudge the bedroom door open with his foot and sat the box down in the room.
“Whats that?” Shinya asked looking at the box.
“Food. I'm going to go look for a bag or something later.” Kyo walked over to the dresser and opened the drawer.
“What are you doing, those are someone's personals!” Shinya asked shocked that the older male would just rummage through someone's drawers.
“They're dead Shinya.” Kyo flatly said as he picked up a pair of boxers examining them, they were clean. He threw them towards Shinya. “These seem your size. The water is running go take a shower.”
“I'm not wearing another person's underwear!”
“Shinya don't start. Just go.” Kyo said giving the younger one a flat look.
“Well, will you stand outside the door keeping watch, just in case.”
“You know I will.” Kyo grabbed a pair for himself.
Shinya stood up, boxers in hand, and made his way to the bathroom with Kyo trailing behind. Shinya stepped into the bathroom and turned around facing Kyo.
“You promise you wont leave?”
Kyo rolled his eyes and sat down leaning against the wall next to the door frame. “I'll be right here when you get out.”
Shinya closed the door with no further words and locked it after a moment.
“Don't take forever!” Kyo yelled through the door.
After a few moments he heard the shower start and then Shinya's humming. Kyo started to think about the car ride last night.
By the way Shinya cried himself to sleep, Kyo figured he must have been really close to his mother.
Though Kyo himself had never really been close to either of his parents he still felt he somewhat knew and could relate to Shinya's agony.
The older man heard the shower turn off making the sound of the Shinya's hums become louder. Kyo didn't think he'd complain about Shinya's humming anymore not after the cry fest that ensued last night. Even then the humming had become somewhat comforting to older man despite his annoyance with it.
He heard Shinya's hums stop as the younger man unlocked the door and pulled it open.
“You stayed!” Shinya exclaimed happily.
“Yeah, but that doesn't mean you get to go shouting it from the highest rooftop.” Kyo pulled the younger man out of the door way so he could step in. “Now you wait for me.”
“But, I don't want to be-”
Kyo shut the door in the middle of Shinya's sentence.
“Out here by myself.” Shinya finished in a whisper.
He turned around and used the door to slid himself gently to the ground. He pulled his knees to his chest and started humming again as he stared down the stair case.
Shinya heard a loud crash come from the basement. He immediately stopped his humming and stood up. His breathing became slightly audible as the fear crept into him. He quickly ran to the room they had stayed the night in and grabbed Kyo's crow bar before returning to the staircase and timidly descending them. He cautiously looked around every corner before proceeding, trying to remember how Kyo had gone about inspecting the place the previous night. He got to the basement and carefully opened the door before stepping in. He reached for the light switch and flipped it on in hope that since the water still worked in the house, that maybe the electricity would too, however his hopes were dashed when they didn't come on.
He stuck his back against the wall and walked down the stairs sideways until he saw what had fallen. A tool box that had been put on the shelf in front of the broken window had fallen onto the cement ground. Shinya nervously looked around looking for what could've made the tool box fall. Once his eyes had darted around the room enough to make sure there was no zombies Shinya walked over to pick the tool box up and return it to its position on the shelf. As he picked the tools up he saw a delicate white paw reach out and lightly scratch him. Out of reaction he quickly pulled back and watched as a kitten slinked its way out from under the shelf. Shinya idled there for a while staring at the feline trying to figure out if it was infected or not. He picked the kitten up carefully so it wouldn't scratch him again and walked up the stairs with it held away from his body. Once in the light Shinya looked at the kittens eyes and seen they were clear of infection.
“I shall name you Tina.” He whispered as he held the kitten close and walked up the stairs to sit and wait on Kyo.
When the older man finally stepped out of the bathroom, he eyed the younger man who was enjoying the company of the kitten.
“No.” Kyo said and started walking towards the room that had their stuff in it.
“No?” Shinya asked getting up and following him, cat in hand. “What do you mean no?”
Kyo turned and pointed to the cat, “It's not coming with us. Put it down.”
“She is not an it, she is Tina.” Shinya informed.
“You already fucking named it!?”
Shinya shook his head yes.
“How in the hell did you find a cat and become attached to it in the less-than-twenty minutes I was taking a shower!?”
“She's coming with us Kyo.”
“No she's not.”
“Yes she is!” Shinya suddenly shouted in anger.
Kyo was shocked at the sudden rage from his tag-a-long.
“Listen thick lips, the cat is staying and we're going.” Kyo growled.
“She's going with us, end of story.” Shinya growled back.
Kyo rolled his eyes, there was no telling no to Shinya, something Kyo was catching onto.
“Fine.” Kyo mumbled. “But if it ends up running off or getting infected you have to leave it.”
“Don't worry I won't let it.” Shinya took the small kitten and put it into the small cloth bag that once carried their food and slung it over his arm carefully.
Kyo rolled his eyes, Shinya looked like one of those teenage girls that carry toy dogs around in their purses. “Help me find a bag or something so we can carry this food.”
Shinya took his bag off and placed it lightly on the bed so as not to hurt his new pet.
Kyo began digging through the closet as Shinya mindlessly ran his eyes around the room not really looking, but appreciating the room and the person who owned it. He pulled the curtain back slightly to look outside. He creased his brow in concern as he watched a guy running towards the back door empty handed with two zombies chasing after him. Without hesitation Shinya dashed out of the room.
“Shinya!” Kyo yelled and chased after him. “Shinya what are you doing!?”
The younger man turned the corner at the bottom of the stairs and disappearing from Kyo's sight.
“Shinya what the fuck are you doing!?” Kyo said catching up to Shinya who was at the back door tugging on it.
“Help me open this Kyo!”
“Why?”
“There's a guy out there running towards it with zombies after him!”
Kyo just stood there and watched the younger man tug at the door. It was against his rules to help out another who was being chased.
“KYO! He's unarmed!”
Kyo pushed Shinya aside and pulled on the knob. It didn't budge. He placed his right foot on the wall and pushed with all his might and managed to pop the door open.
“Come on! In here!” Shinya shouted to the running man.
The man picked up his speed an lunged into the house leaving enough time for Kyo to slam the door shut before the zombies could get in.
“Up stairs. Come on we have to leave.” Kyo said running towards the stairs.
Shinya helped the man off the floor and ran after Kyo.
The younger man found Kyo on the ground in the room pulling a duffel bag out from under the bed. He began helping Kyo shove the items into the bag as the strange man entered the room.
“Thank you so much.” The man breathed.
“Shut up.” Kyo told him. “It's because of you we have to leave.”
“Kyo.” Shinya scolded as he zipped up the bag.
The older man walked over to the window and looked out it. He pulled the curtain down and pried the window open. He stuck his head out and gave a little whistle grabbing the two zombies attentions.
“Shinya.” He said pulling his head back in. “Help me get this to the window.” He said pointing at the nightstand.
Shinya obeyed and helped Kyo lift the heavy table and placed it on the windowsill.
“Ready, Let go.” The older man told him.
The two let go and watched as the table dropped down onto one of the zombies, knocking the zombie toll down to one.
“Okay we have to find something else.” Kyo told them.
The other man immediately ran out of the room and to the next.
“Here!” The man shouted.
Kyo and Shinya ran into the room.
“That'll work.” Kyo said walking over to a personal safe and helping the other man pick it up.
“Shinya the window.” Kyo told him.
The younger man ran to the window and opened it, clapping his hands to get the remaining zombies attention.
The zombie clawed at the house as if he was attempting to climb it.
“Alright let it go.” Kyo told the other man.
The safe plummeted towards the zombie hitting him on the side of the head and destroying it.
“Well that takes care of that.” The strange man said. “Thank you guys.”
“You can thank us by leaving us alone.” Kyo spat at him.
“Kyo, stop it.” Shinya hissed.
“I already have to deal with your annoying ass and now a fucking cat, there is no way in hell I'm putting up with another liability!” Kyo snapped and walked out of the room to retrieve their food bag from the other room.
Shinya smiled at the new man, “Don't worry about him, he just has anger problems. I'm Shinya.”
“It's great to meet you Shinya, I'm Toshiya.”
Shinya turned to walk out of the room, “We have a cat. Her name is Tina.”
“Come on.” Kyo said grabbing Shinya by the arm once the younger man was out in the hall. “Here.” He said shoving the bag with Tina in it into Shinya's arms.
“Where are we going?” Shinya asked as he was pulled down the stairs, being followed by Toshiya.
“Far away from here.”
“Why?”
“Because zombies always attract more zombies, that's why they mostly travel in packs.” Kyo quickly spat.
Kyo looked out the small window on the front door to make sure the coast was clear before prying the door open.
It took Kyo a few moments to get the door open but he managed.
“Okay Shinya come on.” He looked at Toshiya. “You, I don't care what you do as long as it's not with us.”
“Kyo,” Shinya scolded. “We're not leaving him.”
“We're not, he's leaving us.” Kyo corrected.
“Please,” Toshiya begged. “I don't want to be alone.”
Kyo raised an eyebrow. He picked up an umbrella by the door.
“Here, Protection.” Kyo said then grabbed Shinya's bag with Tina in it and threw it at Toshiya. “Company.”
“Kyo!” Shinya whined. “Don't throw Tina!”
“Hey that disease ridden thing is now his problem.”
“Kyo!” Shinya shouted. “We're not leaving Toshiya and he's not leaving us and Tina's coming along too!” Shinya delicately took the bag back from Toshiya.
“Shinya we don't have time for this!”
“Then why are you still trying to argue!”
“Fuck.” Kyo breathed out in anger. “If one of us has to die then it's going to be him!” He pointed to Toshiya before walking out the door.
“Come on Toshiya.” Shinya said pulling the other man by the arm. “Don't worry he'll loosen up.”
