“Kyo I'm tired of walking.” Shinya whined. “Can't we just rest for a moment?”
“No.” Kyo snapped. “I told you we were going to be walking so suck it up you over grown baby, unless you want to walk all the way back to your stupid fucking camp by yourself.”
“Well where are we walking to?”
Kyo rolled his eyes, Shinya hadn't shut his big lipped trap since Kyo agreed to let him tag-a-long.
“We're just walking to be walking.” Kyo answered.
“That makes no sense!” Shinya shouted stopping and throwing his hands in the air.
Kyo stopped and looked over his shoulder, “Makes as much since as you shouting when zombies are attracted to sound.” He turned and started walking again.
“So you do understand how stupid this is right?”
Kyo shrugged.
“Kyo!~” Shinya whined. “My feet hurt.”
“Would you just shut up!” Kyo shouted in a whisper so as not to further alert any potentially surrounding zombies.
“Bu-”
“SHUSH!”
Shinya dropped to the ground and sat in a crisscross Indian position. Causing Kyo to stop walking and turn around. The older man rolled his eyes.
“Come on get up.” Kyo said motioning with his left hand for the younger man to stand.
“No. I said my feet hurt.” Shinya said crossing his arms and looking away.
“How fucking old are you!?”
Shinya shrugged still not looking at Kyo.
“Get up.”
“No.”
“Get. Up.” Kyo gritted through his teeth grabbing the younger man by his arm and pulling him to his feet. “Come on. We've already made too much noise here.” He started dragging Shinya by the arm.
“But my fe-”
Kyo quickly turned and put his index finger in Shinya's face, “Shut the fuck up, or I'll brake your arm, giving you something to whine about.”
“Okay. I'll be quiet.” Shinya quickly said.
Kyo let go of the younger mans arm and continued walking.
“I'm just surprised you didn't leave me sitting there.” Shinya said as he followed Kyo.
“Gah!” Kyo shouted in frustration as he threw his hands in the air. “Is it possible for you to shut up!?”
“I was just surprised.” Shinya said and looked down at his feet as they continued to walk. “I didn't mean to make you angry.”
Kyo let out a heavy sigh and looked over at Shinya, “Give me your arm.”
Shinya's eyes got big, “You were serious?”
“Yea.” Kyo said holding out is hand and motioning with his fingers for Shinya to give him his arm.
“No!” Shinya shouted in shock as he put his arms behind his back.
“Come on, we ain't got all day.”
Shinya shook his head no.
“Just give me your arm now and it will, for the most part, be quick and painless.”
Shinya shook his head no again and took a step back.
“Then you better keep those big ass lips of yours locked shut at least until the sun goes down, ya hear?”
The younger man shook his head yes.
Kyo turned around and began walking again.
It wasn't long before Shinya began humming lightly to himself. Kyo stopped and grabbed Shinya by the shoulders and pushed him into the nearest tree. He tightened his grip on the younger mans shoulders and turned his face into a scowl.
“You are the most irritating, annoying, childish, fuck I have ever had the displeasure of meeting.” He gritted through clenched teeth.
“What's that?” Shinya asked.
“You've got to be fucking kidding me. You're fucking stupid too?”
Shinya frowned, “I wasn't talking about what you said.” The younger man said moving his shoulders slightly, trying to get Kyo to let go or to loosen up. “I was talking about that sound.” Kyo raised an eyebrow. “It reminded me of a car or something like it. Are we near a road?”
“How the fuck would I know?” Kyo asked sliding his hands off the other man.
“Come on.” Shinya said darting off in a run towards the left where he thought he heard the sound.
“What, now you're ready to move without complaint?” Kyo mumbled to himself and ran after the younger man.
Getting closer to the where he originally heard the noise, Shinya slowed, waiting for Kyo before he continued any further.
“You just can't run off like that!” Kyo hissed at Shinya once he caught up, “I hope you know that if you get attacked by zombies there's no way in hell I'm risking my ass to save yours.”
Shinya held a finger up in front of his lips. “Shh.”
“And now you of all people are telling me to 'shh'?” Kyo asked a little angered.
Shinya ignored the fuming older male. Once there was silence the two could hear faint voices. Kyo motioned for Shinya to stay put, while he crouched closer to the voices. Kyo inched his way forward trying his best not to make a noise, so as not to alert the people he was going to peep on.
“Kyo.” Shinya whispered, behind the older male.
Kyo quickly turned his head to face the younger man that was crouched down following him, “Shinya for fuck sake, if there was ever a time to shut your lady lips, now would be the time! Now I said to stay put, watch our back so nothing creeps up on us!” He scolded in a hushed tone.
Kyo managed to inch his way into a bush and spread the leaves so he was able to peer out secretively on the unsuspecting people. There was two men and a woman. It seems as though they were having car troubles, as one of the men were bent under the popped up hood. The other man, who Kyo guessed was about in his late forties or early fifties, was standing by the one under the hood telling him what to do. In the backseat of the car was the woman, she might have been in her thirties or twenties, Kyo couldn't tell.
“Do you think we could help them? Should we help them? Do you know anything about cars?”
Kyo cranked his neck to the side to see Shinya, who was crouched right behind his left side peering over his shoulder. “I told you to stay there and watch our backs!” Kyo whispered turning to face Shinya, while he pointed at the spot the younger male was suppose to be.
“I'm sorry but I always have to pee when I'm left alone like that.”
“Well you're going to have a hell of a lot more time alone if I'm dead! Is that what you want!?”
Shinya shook his head no.
“That's what I thought. Now go back to watching.”
“Umm, Kyo..”
“Why can't you just do this one simple task?” Kyo said taking hold of Shinya's shoulders, trying to turn him around.
“Look behind you.”
Kyo turned around to find the older man starring down at them with an opened smile. “What!?” Kyo spat out at the man.
“Well it's nice to know the people we find spying on us are rude.” The older man joked. “I guess that's why you were spying.” He laughed.
“We weren't spying.” Kyo snapped at the old man as he stood up.
“Yes we were.” Shinya corrected.
“You,” Kyo said pointing at Shinya, “You are a thorn in my side.”
Shinya only shrugged.
“I'm Shinya.” He said bowing to the older man. “And this is Kyo.”
The older man bowed, “I am Matsimoto. It is very nice to meet you.”
“Is there anyway we can help? It looks like you're having car troubles.” Shinya asked.
Kyo glared at the younger man, secretly wanting to tie him to a tree and ring the zombie dinner bell.
“Yes, we are having car trouble, please any help you have to offer is much appreciated.”
Shinya went to walk towards the car but was stopped when Kyo grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him back.
“Who are they?” Kyo asked pointing towards the vehicle.
“They are my son and daughter.” The older man picked up on Kyo's hesitance. “Do not worry, you can trust us. We will do you no wrong.”
Kyo rolled his eyes, where has he heard that one before.
Kyo stood a few feet away from the car watching the surroundings and occasionally looking back to see if any harm had come to Shinya. Although the younger man had annoyed Kyo to the point where he loathed ever stopping to help him and his friend, not to mention he'd broken many of Kyo's unspoken safety rules, he still felt some kind of need to protect Shinya, as if he was trying to right a wrong that was never there.
“So tell me a little about your friend there.” The older man attempted to pry at Shinya.
“I can't say much.” Shinya told him leaning down towards a part of the motor to get a better look at it.
“Why is that?”
“Because I don't really know him. I only met him a few hours ago.” Shinya said leaning back up and looking at the old man.
“He looks like he's hiding something.” The son said tightening something with a wrench.
“It's not polite to speculate.” The older man told his son. “Tell us, what have you learned from him in the last few hours then Shinya?”
“Well what I've learned about Kyo since I met him is, he's used to being alone, he doesn't trust people easily, he likes to keep things quiet, he's extremely cautious, he likes to walk just to walk, and he's a bit of an ass. Oh and I think he thinks I'm annoying.”
“Someone must have done him some harm.” The son said putting the wrench down and reaching into the motor with his right hand.
“I think he might be looking for someone, why else would he walk to just walk?” The older man speculated.
“Your guys's guess is as good as mine.” Shinya said shrugging.
“So where are you guys headed?” The son asked.
“I have no clue but Kyo seems to know,” Shinya looked back over towards Kyo. “I think.”
“Well the sun is starting to go down, you know how those zombies get more active at night and I don't think we could live with ourselves if we just leave you two out here. Hows about you two come with us? At least for the night.” The older man offered.
“Really?” Shinya asked. The older man and his son nodded. “Okay! But let me go tell Kyo.” Shinya lightly jogged over to Kyo. The shorter male turned around at the sound of foot steps. “Hey Kyo, they just offered us to stay with them for the night. I said yes!”
Kyo grabbed Shinya by the arm and pulled him down a bit. “Are you crazy!? We don't know them! For all we know they could be planning on stealing everything we have!”
“What do we have that they'd steal? A crow bar and monkey wrench?”
Kyo growled out a frustrated sigh. “Shinya, you can't go around trusting every single person you meet.”
“But they seem like good people. And besides what's your plan then? Are we just going to keep walking to walk?”
“Yes!” Kyo ended up shouting.
“No Kyo! I'm tired and I'm hungry and I know you are too!”
“Fine! But don't be whining to me when we end up with less than we already have, and left for dead!” Kyo began to storm off.
“Where are you going!?”
“To take a piss!”
Shinya rolled his eyes and walked back to the car.
“What was that all about?” The son questioned Shinya.
“Nothing.”
“You know for you guys just meeting today, he seems oddly fatherly towards you.”
“Fatherly?”
The son nodded. “Hey, can you jump in the driver's seat and try to start the car when I ask you to?”
“Sure.” Shinya opened the driver's door and sat half way in waiting for a cue.
He couldn't help but look in the review mirror at the woman sitting in the backseat.
She had her hair all strung about in a messy bun behind her head, makeup done perfectly, and despite there being no running water practically anywhere her clothes looked like they had been freshly washed that morning. With her arms crossed and a mean scowl on her face as she stared back at Shinya in the mirror everything about her screamed, high maintenance.
“What are you looking at?” She bitterly bit.
“Hi.” Shinya said automatically despite the bitterness. “I'm Shinya.”
The girl rolled her eyes, “Stop looking at me you creep.”
“Sorry.” Shinya said immediately diverting his eyes from the mirror on the windshield. “I didn't mean anything by looking at you.”
The girl huffed, and turned her head to look out the window on the right.
“Shinya, give it a turn.” The son said in a slightly raised voice.
Shinya turned the key only to hear the grinding of gears.
“Okay stop.”
Shinya turned the key to the off position. He turned his head to look in the direction Kyo had gone to take his piss. He squinted his eyes trying to see where the older man had gone when Kyo finally emerged from the bushes and trees, crow bar in hand.
As Kyo got closer he could see fresh coagulated blood decorating from the bent part of the bar to the sharp separated tip.
“How much longer until this piece of shit is up and running?” Kyo asked impatiently while darting his eyes in every direction.
“I don't know.” The son answered. “I can't find the problem. Why? What happened?”
“I didn't get to take a piss.” Kyo answered and looked down at the motor.
“You were attacked?” The older man asked.
Kyo nodded his head.
“Are there more?” The son asked frantically.
“How the fuck would I know? That zombie could've been alone or in a huge fucking herd. The only thing I know is that fucker was fast. Faster than any other I've ever come in contact with.” Kyo said picking up the wrench and reaching deep into the motor.
“Do you think it's possible for zombies to evolve?” The son asked.
“I'm not sure.” The old man answered. “I guess it's not completely out of the question. Zombies are still somewhat human and humans adapt to their environment just like any other living thing, So I guess it's possible for zombies to become faster so they can catch their prey, especially out here in the woods like this.”
“Fucking fantastic.” Kyo mumbled. “Shinya, turn it.” Kyo ordered pulling his hand and wrench out.
Shinya did only to be met again with the grinding of gears.
“Father, did you hear that?” The son asked scared.
The father nodded, “We need to hurry, there are more.”
“Shinya turn it again.” Kyo yelled.
The screaming of pained gears filled the quiet air as Kyo leaned down close to quickly but carefully examine everything.
“Okay!” Kyo shouted and as soon as Shinya turned the key in the opposite direction Kyo shoved his hand deep into the motor again.
“Did you find the problem?” The old man asked becoming increasingly worried about his surroundings and the safety of his children.
“Yeah.” Kyo said stretching his arm the best he could. “But I can't reach it.”
“Father!” The son shouted as a zombie ran with stealth from the trees towards them.
“Shinya close the door!” The old man shouted.
Shinya for once obeyed someone and slammed the door shut and even locked it, all the while the girl inside was screaming.
“Fucking kill it!” Kyo shouted as he still reached for that once piece of messed up engine to fix it.
The son took the crow bar from Kyo and raised it like a bat and swung it as soon as the zombie came close enough, however the zombie managed to dodge it and tackle the son to the ground.
The old man quickly ran to his sons aid with the wrench Kyo had been using and smashed the zombie on the head knocking the rotting dead off his son, where he then stepped on the things skull forever ending it.
“Are you okay?” The old man asked patting his sons body. “Were you bitten or scratched?”
The son did a quick self check before letting a sigh of relief out and shaking his head no.
“I got it!” Kyo shouted finally being able to place that misplaced object back in its original place. “Shinya start it!”
Shinya turned the key finally starting the car. He sighed in relief but was quickly scared again as another stealth zombie smashed up against the window of the car igniting the girls horrifying screams again.
The zombie banged it's already decaying face roughly against the glass of the back right hand passenger window smearing coagulated blood everywhere as he let out hisses and unholy screams.
Kyo grabbed the large stick that had been holding the hood up and pulled it out causing the hood to slam down and grab the zombies attention. It's head snapped automatically towards Kyo as it let out a loud carnivorous screech and ran towards the short man. Kyo raised the stick and hit the zombie just right causing it to momentarily lose its balance. But that's all the time Kyo needed to raise the hunk of timber again and smash the head of the attacker.
“Okay in the car. Everyone in the car.” Kyo quickly ordered.
