[Chapter1] [Chapter2] “Move over!” The daughter yelled at Shinya who was stuck in the backseat between Kyo and her.
“Sorry there's no room, this car is tiny.” Shinya informed her through a mouth full of ham sandwich.
“You don't have to talk just do as I say!”
“She's worse than you.” Kyo mumbled to Shinya while holding his own ham sandwich.
“I heard that.” The girl bitterly bit.
“Like I fucking care.”
“You should! You're lucky we don't kick your short ass outta the car!”
“This car wouldn't even work if it wasn't for me!”
“My brother and father could've gotten it to work just fine.”
“Right was that going to be before or after they were eaten by zombies while you cowardly hid in the car?” Kyo snapped.
“Matsimoto.” Shinya whispered amidst the arguing. “Make them stop.”
“Is that suppose to be insulting!? If so you way missed the marker on that one!” The daughter continued to shout.
“You guys do know zombies are attracted to sound right?” Shinya asked.
“Shut up idiot, we're in a moving car!”
“Leave him alone! At least he's more helpful than you are!” Kyo defended Shinya.
“Stupidity isn't helpful it's a hindrance!”
“Then you should've been gotten rid of a long time ago!”
“You're an asshole!”
“Do you know Donald Ducks middle name is Fauntleroy?” Kyo asked in mild tone.
“What the hell does that have to do with anything!?”
“Oh, I thought we were stating useless facts.”
“Alright the three of you knock it off.” The old man said turning in his seat to see everyone in the back.
“Three?” Shinya asked. “What did I do?”
“Just the three of you be quiet for at least five minutes.”
“Good luck on that.” Kyo said. “Big lips here doesn't know how to shut his trap. Oh and if he does, prepare yourself for the worse humming you'll ever hear.”
“My humming is not that bad.” Shinya mumbled.
“Just shush.” The old man calmly ordered.
The car fell silent for a few minutes and everyone began to eat their food again, until Shinya picked up on his humming.
“You see what I mean!? Kyo shouted. “It's like he has to make noise!”
“I'm sorry! I do!” Shinya yelled.
“Calm down the two of you.” The old man said.
“Just tell me Shinya, why do you have to make noise? Just, just, just tell me, why?” Kyo asked.
“It's a nervous habit.”
“What the fuck do you have to be nervous about right now?”
“I . . . I . . . I don't know.” Shinya stumbled.
“Then you're lying.”
“Okay!” Shinya shouted. “When I was a little kid I got lost and when my mom found me she told me to always make noise when she can't see me so she knows I'm there. It's habit! Are you happy now!?”
“Why in the hell would I be happy?”
“Because I still do something that I did when I was a kid and will continue to do even though my mom's de-” Shinya stopped not wanting to finish his sentence.
The whole car fell silent. Shinya looked down at the darkness that began to encompass his feet.
“It's okay Shinya.” Kyo said putting his hand on the younger mans back. “It's okay.”
The rest of the drive was silent until the darkness of night swallowed the car.
Kyo leaned forward into the front seat. “Don't you guys think we should stop for the night?” He whispered so he wouldn't wake the two sleeping next to him.
“We've been looking for any kind of place to stop but there hasn't been any.” The older man stated.
“Hmmm, and we can't just stay in the car either, our smell is too strong.”
“The more people we have the stronger our scent is so the more reenforced the place we choose has to be.” The older man informed the already knowing Kyo.
“Yeah that's why we've passed so many buildings so far.” The son added in.
It was silent for a moment as Kyo thought of what to do.
“Pull over.” Kyo finally told them.
“What?” The son asked.
“Pull over.” Kyo repeated.
The son looked at his father. The old man nodded his head in agreement with Kyo.
As the car slowed to a stop the two sleeping gently woke up.
“Are we there yet?” Shinya asked trying to get his eyes to stay open as he stretched what he could of his cramped limbs without bothering the bitter girl next to him.
“You and me are.” Kyo answered as he scoped out the landscape of an abandoned house.
“What do you mean you and me? What about the others?” The younger male asked in a sleepy voice.
“Our scent is too strong. We have to split up.”
“What!?” Shinya asked shocked.
“Dad we're not just going to leave them are we!?” The son asked his dad.
“Kyo is right. Our scent together as five is too strong. Staying together is putting a bigger target on our back and an easier trail to follow.” The old man informed his son.
“Darn just when I was starting to like you heathens.” The bitter daughter mouthed off.
Kyo rolled his eyes, “Well take what we had when we met and that's all.”
“Nonsense.” The old man told him. “You had no food with you or water. The only thing you had with you besides each other was a crow bar and a monkey wrench. So you will take food and water.”
“Thank you.” Kyo said.
Before Kyo opened the door to step outside he turned to Shinya and stuck his finger in his face, “For fuck sake Shinya be very quiet. Those things are more active at night than during the day and since humans aren't built with night vision goggles we'll never see them coming. Understand?”
Shinya shook his head yes.
“No humming either okay?”
Again Shinya shook his heads in agreement.
“And when we're inside and safe, nothing above a very low whisper and a few words at a time.”
Shinya shook his head a third time.
Kyo turned back towards the window and gave the area another look over before opening the door and stepping out with Shinya close behind. The son popped the trunk so the two could get their weapons as well as their recently donated items before closing it and carefully beginning their way up the drive to the house. The car quietly pulled away as Kyo and Shinya disappeared behind a large tree.
Kyo peeked around the tree and scanned the landscape again, he grabbed Shinya by the arm and took off in a quick run towards the house. The older man grabbed the knob and attempted to turn it, however it was locked. With the sun almost completely set and a dark navy color casting itself over the land Kyo wanted to panic, but he knew if he panicked nothing good would come from it. The older man went for the window that was next to the door. It was nailed shut. Kyo let out a quiet breath and looked at Shinya, he grabbed his hand and walked over to the corner of the house and peered around the corner. The shorter man looked back at Shinya and held a finger to his lips, as a reminder to keep quiet as they edged their way around the house.
Kyo timidly began walking around the side pulling Shinya along with him, being very cautious not to step on the many twigs that decorated the ground. He could hear Shinya's breathing become quick and heavy from being scared, he tightened his hand around the younger mans, like a mother would do a child to comfort them, and walked a little faster. They made it to the back of the house, where there was a back door. Kyo checked the handle, locked. He started to panic, he could hear rustling in the trees. Kyo noticed there was a small window by the ground, that led into the basement. Just big enough for them to hopefully fit through. He let go of Shinya's hand and bent down to try and open it, the latch was locked. Kyo took his crowbar and tried to pry it open.
“Kyo!” Shinya yelled.
The shorter male turned around to see a zombie running full speed at him. Kyo stood up just in time, hitting the zombie in the chest with the prying end of the crowbar, knocking it back a bit. Kyo took this moment to turn around and smash the glass of the window.
“Shinya! Climb through the window!”
The zombie was already back and attacking Kyo. With a few hits to the head and a kick to the torso, it fell to the ground. Kyo raised his crowbar above his head and drove it right through the flesh eater's skull, killing it. Placing his foot on the head of the zombie he began pulling his crowbar from its cranium, Kyo looked behind him to see Shinya still standing there. With a sharp tug his weapon was released. Angrily he walked over to the younger male and grabbed him by the arm.
“I told you to climb through the fucking window, why the hell are you still standing here!?” Kyo hissed through clenched teeth.
“I was scared you were going to get hurt.” Shinya replied with a concerned look on his face.
“Well I didn't see you helping!”
“Sorry.” Shinya looked away from the angry older male.
“Yeah, well sorry isn't going to help any when you're fucking dead.” Kyo released Shinya's arm with a harsh tug. “Now listen to me for once and climb through the god damned window.” He kicked some of the glass away to try and prevent them from being cut.
Shinya listened and lowered himself onto the ground, sticking his legs first through the opening. Kyo grabbed a hold of his forearms and helped him lower into the basement. Once he was in Kyo did the same, once he was far enough in Shinya grabbed him by the sides and helped him down. The older man quickly scanned the dark room unable to see much.
“Help me move that shelf to cover the window.” Kyo ordered in a hushed tone.
“But it has no back.” Shinya answered back.
“We can stack things on it, so if it's knocked over we'll be able to hear it.”
“Okay.” “Shinya said grabbing a side of the shelf and helping push it in place.
Shinya carefully stacked items on top of the shelf that would be considered noisy if they were to fall off and onto the floor.
After the shelf was set up to Kyo's liking the two cautiously walked up the steps of the basement,
Kyo taking the lead. The older man poked his head around the corner to look into the living room. His heart dropped when he seen a family laying there rotting, each with gun shots to the head, a suicide pack evident. He turned back to Shinya.
“We can't go in there.” Kyo told him.
“Why? Are there zombies?” Shinya whispered.
“No. It's just best not to go in there.” Kyo answered in a low voice as he walked back passed Shinya to the upstairs.
Shinya stuck his head around the corner and saw the horrifying scene and wanted to throw up. He quickly turned away holding his stomach and followed Kyo upstairs.
Kyo checked every room and cleared them before pulling Shinya into a room he found suitable to stay in.
“We'll stay in here.” Kyo told him shutting the door and pushing a dresser up against it.
“Why are you pushing a dresser up against the door?” Shinya asked helping him.
“Just encase.” Kyo told him.
“Why did you choose this room? It's so small.”
“Because it has a window next to a drainage pipe so if we have to we can safely climb down it.”
Shinya shook his head in understanding, he had a lot to learn from Kyo.
As Shinya laid down and closed his eyes to resume his sleep Kyo stayed up, nervously looking through the curtains and out the window, he knew when a zombie attacks it attracts others.
