My hometown is much like the kind you mention, where most people don't leave out of fear, self-doubt, apprehension or whatever it may be, and so they may miss out on so much.
I also feel as though sometimes staying home is good, but people need to get out and see the rest of what's out there before making the -choice- to stay or move on.

I agree with that young lady who talked to you, do it now, before anything else holds you back. I'm in the middle of something like that as we speak, certain things [mostly good things] are holding me back from moving to a bigger city [where more opportunities are waiting for me].
Even if it doesn't end up being the right scene for you, at least you tried it. God knows, when my opportunity comes around to get out my small town [very much like the one you live in, at least it sounds like it], I'll grab that opportunity and run.
Big changes are scary, but like you said, it might make you into a different person...
