i saw your post in blackhistoryjogamaticJuly 7 2006, 06:29:08 UTC
but i'm not a member so i couldn't respond. i just wanted to say, while its not a history lesson, the movie Yeelen is worth watching. its story is a folk tale from 14th century mali [i believe]. very beautifully done. amazingly i found it at blockbuster.
I hope you don't find this too odd but I was looking through college_help and saw some comments you made about Smith. I was recently accepted there and will most likely be attending seeing as how they have made me an outstanding financial aid offer. However, while I don't have ANY reservations about the academics, I was hoping you could answer a few questions about the social life, if that's okay.
1.) What are some of the best dorms to stay in? Or what is dorm life in general like? 2.) Is it really hard to date? (Obviously, since it's an all girl school, but are there any options for co ed socializing?) 3.) I'm aware Northampton is a smaller town, but coming from a big city, I've grown reliable on stores like Target and other chain and mall stores, are there any places like that around?
I think those are the main questions I had, thanks in advance!
Hey! Congrats on getting into Smith. I don't find it odd at all and I'll attempt to answer your questions for sure. I also highly suggest if you have facebook to join the class of 2013 facebook group where you can meet some of your future classmates via the interweb + there are tons more current smithies hangin' there who can answers your questions, too.
1.) What are some of the best dorms to stay in? Or what is dorm life in general like?Everyone (well almost everyone...) will tell you their house is the best house to live in. Def look into the housing system more because its very unique. The "best" house for you and "house life" can vary dramatically. What are you looking for? Lots of house community or not so interested in participating? Party central? Quiet? Mix of both? Green Street houses tend to be on the quieter side, the Quad on the rowdier side (by Smith standards anyway) and Elm/Center tend to have a mix. Granted sterotypes are just that- I currently live in Capen/Elm (though I'll be moving to one of the co-ops next
( ... )
a few questions I wanted to add after some more research.
a.) What kind of concerts do you get in the area? I'm a fan of the pop rock genre, but since it doesn't seem to be a big city...... b.) Tell me about convocation, haha.
What kind of concerts do you get in the area? I'm a fan of the pop rock genre, but since it doesn't seem to be a big city If a band or artist can fill an arena/large venue, they'll go to Boston (my hometown) or Hartford. There are tons of lesser known but kickass artists that come here though! Among other arists, I've seen Mirah, and Iron & Wine here and I'm seeing Girlyman. Boys Like Girls came to Smith in October and Vampire Weekend's coming next month. The Iron Horse owns several small venues closer to Smith. Check their website here for more info with schedules, etc. However, you will not have hours and hours to go concerts, trust me. So which artists come to Noho shouldn't be a deciding factor imho anyway.
Tell me about convocation, haha. From my POV, it was an excuse to get pierced downtown, get trashed, and wear provocative clothing. It's a ceremony the day before fall semester classes start with speakers and things. Every house has a theme (don't have to follow it though) and many dress crazy/over the top/sometimes in little
( ... )
I'm sorry to bother you so late, btw, I figured you'd already be sleep and just wouldn't see it until tomorrow.
none of the questions I really asked you were deciding factors, if anything, I'd go to smith simply for the study abroad program. It's more of just to gauge what parts of my life would change and what wouldn't, I'd say I'm pretty set on Smith anyway, regardless of what you'd have answered, but I'm sure it'll be affirmed when I visit next month!
It's not a problem, it's my own fault for procrastinating btw + I love answering questions. Smith study aboard has tons of opportunities, I would def suggest looking into it more but you don't have to decide on leaving before you get there! If you are going to Open Campus and want to stay in touch, I can offer to show you around downtown Noho or provide you with anything you want to get out of the visit that I can which tours and panels can't provide.
