She lifted her stern gaze, measuring in deep concentration as she balanced herself on the tightrope.
"Don't be afraid." Her coach bellowed. "Just go with your instincts, don't second guess yourself."
Victoria glanced at the stands on either side, the net below her far from comforting within the large tent. At least there wasn't an audience, or she may not have the nerve at all.
With graceful yet calculated spin and flip of her body, she maintained balance until she reached the end of the rope, exhaling in relief.
She heard a loud clap and turned her head, able to see a figure in shadow sitting in the stands. She arched an eyebrow, and assumed it to be another investor the circus head allowed in.
She stepped out of the dressing room, finished when she felt a pair of eyes staring her down. She looked on either side of her and saw no one. Once outside, she noticed a man dressed in a crisp suit with the door opened.
"We've been waiting for you." He informed.
Victoria stepped back, looking to see if maybe he was speaking to someone else. It was then her cell rang and she checked it, a text from her boss.
"Treat him well."
She scowled, but knew the financial crisis the circus troupe was facing, and reluctantly entered the car.
Beside her, the man from earlier smiled politely. "A pleasure."
"I'm sure." Victoria replied icily, her tone didn't faze him.
"You're a captivating sight. I never thought I'd take an interest in such arts, but I was glad to be proven wrong." He said calmly as the car moved into the highway. "You don't have to worry, I won't take advantage of you." He commented, noting her crossed arms and legs.
"I've just met you now, forgive me if I'm not completely convinced."
The student could only keep herself guarded against the potential investor. She had turned away many before much to the displeasure of her superiors, but at that time the funding was adequate. No longer was that the case, but still she couldn't conform to what the man may have wanted.
"Please drop me off at my home, Sir." She added, resisting the bitter tone.
"Are you pleading or begging?"
"What? None have never begged you?"
"They have, but never to get away from me." Yesung corrected with a small smirk.
"Ah, must be killing the innocent with those good looks of yours." Victoria said bitterly, earning another chuckle. "How many women or even men compliment you daily?"
"I lost count, how many honest ones I've heard, however, is rare."
Victoria took this chance to steal a quick glance, studying his features in those mere seconds. Rather than his looks, however, she took in his character, one she couldn't completely grasp beneath his calm exterior.
Rather than her apartment, they entered a gated community. She pursed her lips, uneasy of the feeling once they arrived at his home. She figured there was no turning back now and decided to enter, but will still set up her boundaries.
"Who are you?" She asked rather rudely. He was still unfazed.
She gaped the moment he pulled out a pen, grabbed her messenger bag and signed it.
"Did I ask you to defile my products?" She asked hotly.
"I'm showing you identification, or is that not enough for you?" Victoria's cautious expression confirmed his answer and he sighed as he opened his glass cabinet. "You got paid today, right?"
"If you think-"
"Check." Yesung ordered as he poured bourbon into his glass.
Victoria huffed and reached into her messenger bag, managing to scruffily take out the crumpled paycheck and straightened it in her hands. Yesung looked back, a glint in his eyes as Victoria's eyes widen.
The person who signed each check was this man. She had heard news that a newcomer had bought the circus from the previous owner.
The man's smile widened. "Is that enough validation now?"
-
She couldn't understand his motives. That initial night they met one another, nothing had happened.
It was when the months had continued and she continued to accompany him in his home, she commented. "I doubt you got me just to keep your company."
Yesung sat beside her. "I'm an easily pleased person."
She glanced at the glass bowl now in the middle of the table, constantly filled with chocolate sweets. Yesung briefly left to refill his drink.
"Take as many as you'd like." Yesung uttered with his back turned. She didn't know how he could have seen her eying it, but went ahead and grabbed a few.
"I heard chocolates were your favorite."
She unwrapped one. "You can't buy me."
"I know, but treating you isn't a crime I hope."
She popped a piece into her mouth, chewing it over as she remained silent. He returned to his spot beside her, and she froze the moment his head made contact with her skin.
Victoria tugged at her bag straps, glancing as the man fell asleep in her lap. Slowly, day by day, she was beginning to understand his ways.
He was buying affection, attempting to manufacture the feeling, rather than naturally finding that connection with someone. Victoria felt her anger lessen about him over time. It was difficult as she glanced at his peaceful expression, her fingers gently brush his shoulder soothingly, murmuring a soft lullaby.
She felt this need to protect him grow, and maybe something more.
-
Her friends stared warily as Victoria nonchalantly crossed her arms. "Where to now? Tell him I'm busy."
"We can wait then, 'till you're not." One of them informed politely. Victoria huffed. She turned and excused herself from her friends. The man opened the door as she settled inside and leaned against the seat.
"Going to meet her gigolo?" A friend tried to joke; the others feigned laughter but it was difficult not to believe it.
-
Victoria glanced at the custom made dance studio, made accordingly to her specifications. She narrowed her eyes as she dropped the bag onto the floor.
"Bring him here."
The men filed out and she waited, leaning against the rails with her hand on the mirror when she saw the door open.
"I said to not do this." She warned.
Yesung smirked, standing beside her.
"I told you, I didn't want one." Victoria scolded.
"You're always waiting for others to finish their time, fitting yourself into their schedules. Now you have all the time in the world."
She stood silent, stunned. She didn't think he listened to her rants and complaints, no one else before, or at least bothered to take her seriously.
"If you don't want to remain in the circus forever, that's fine with me. I'll encourage whatever dreams you do have, or hobbies, whatever makes you happy." He informed. "Just ask for anything, and I'll give it to you."
"I don't want anything." She then said. Yesung stared around at the studio.
"Then you make it that much harder to please you."
Victoria lowered her gaze; she tried to maintain her anger, but the others indifferent yet constantly cheerful expression made her resolve waver. She wished he didn't have this effect on her.
"You shouldn't spend your money carelessly like this."
"Am I hearing actual concern from you?"
Victoria glowered, Yesung seemed more pleased by the reaction.
"Thank you." She said begrudgingly.
Yesung tilted his head, subtly beaming. "You're entitled to everything and anything, don't be ashamed of that."
Victoria thinned her lips as he turned around, she blinked repeatedly, fidgeting her finger when she called out. "Are you coming by to see my performance tomorrow night?"
Yesung turned around, emanating confidence. "Of course."
-
She was deaf to the gasps, the awes, all trained on the thin rope.
The moment she lost balance, she could hear the scattered screams, but she managed to grab onto the rope. Skillfully lifting herself and returning to her spot, walking forward until she reached the pole.
She managed it through the end, fueled by the applause, but eyes searching in the crowd until she spotted the man sitting in the distant corner away from the guests. She feigned ignorance, but a warm feeling spread through her chest.
She walked outside but instead of the usual subordinate who greeted her there, it was Yesung, standing in the cold with a bouquet.
She arched an eyebrow when she realized they were chocolate roses instead.
"I hope you like them."
"Tell the man behind this that he can't buy me." She countered, her eyes lit at the gesture. Yesung smiled as he opened the door for her.
"Impressive performance as always." He said, his hand still on the door's handle.
She shifted her gaze upwards, fighting back a smile as she balanced the bouqet in her arm. He closed his eyes the moment she leaned in and kissed him, a move too quick for either of them to enjoy.
She offered a warm smile as she entered the car. He closed the door behind her and joined her on the other side.
Back at his place, he laid his head down on her lap, yet clearly awake in the acrobat's loose embrace. The chocolate roses laid on the glass table in front of them, hands too occupied as they intertwined with the owner. He'd do anything, give anything, because he had his own addiction. A sweet smile he could never resist the moment he laid eyes on her; one he yearned to continue giving and be the exact reason for it.
He was glad to know, he finally was.
