I hate that as a land of immigrants, we are still so intolerant of "outsiders." It makes no sense to me. Maybe today will spark some change. I hope so, anyway.
Just a century ago, anti-immigration rhetoric was aimed at those dirty Irish and Italians, who were not "white" enough for the English/German/whatever people who had already come over. It amazes me that people are so eager to forget history - both their country's and their own.
We can have a healthy debate over immigration. But hate crime isn't a debate. Hate crime isn't about who was born in this country and who wasn't. It's not about where the borders should stand and how open they should be. Hate crime is about finding someone different and blaming them, hurting them, because they're different and (usually) because they're powerless. Hate crime doesn't have any place in a healthy debate. Immigrant policy shouldn't be about the color of an immigrant's skin. Hate crime, by its definition, is about pretty much nothing else.
Im all for immigrants, immigtants IMMIGRATE and become ciizens, they arent border jumping for benifits.
Its an insult to the people who work and study hard TO immigrate, "the REAL immigrants" and take tests that most Americans, myself included, could not pass.
Thats not hate, its the law, need isn't justification of armed robbery, whoy is it justification of illegal immigration?

Both are punishible crimes.
