none of my techy things work with Ubuntu (digital camera, cameraphone, mp3 player, printer, DVD drive).

Really surprised to hear this, because unless they're all very obscure makes most things "just work" with Ubuntu (far better than with Windows IME).

me too. My laptop just works, as has everything I've plugged into it. But then I am a geek - if a very lazy one, hence running ubuntu as it has always just done what it should do.

would love to help, but obv am too far away.

Totally identify with the "its easier/fun to sort someone else's stuff out".

Hope you find someone to help and get it sorted.

Please do. I don't want anything huge (current screen is 20", that's about as big as I'd want). I can be patient.

i'll be in finchley on wednesday, could pop into homebase & buy the bits you need for the rail & then you reimburse me? m says he's happy to fit it, might take him a few weeks to get round to yours though.

Ooh, that would be very useful. I'd appreciate it a lot. Could you do the buying of the rail/fittings and keep the receipt in case it isn't the right thing? I can pick it up from you, and then either M can do it at his leisure or another friend could do it sooner.

As well as the Ubuntu stick for the netbook (in the meantime), I also have a TinyXP CD I can try stuff with ...

What, to put XP on my Eee? Oh, my Eee doesn't talk to my CD/DVD drive, so that might be an issue.

I want a more powerful physically bigger laptop. Will get round to getting one eventually (aiming for 2 months maybe).

Arghlebums.

10", 12", 14"?

Mine's a 12" - may be worth a try to see how the keyboard feels to you.

Don't know. I want a screen that is taller than my current one. How tall is a 12" screen?
