I'm back from Glasgow. Dear gods, I'm not getting the bus again unless it's an overnighter. I had a great time, and I'm now going out with John - if one can ever really 'go out with' someone who lives 400 miles away

For long distance coaching, I just accept it will take all day. Doing it overnight can, unless you're really lucky, just result in not getting much sleep and thus losing the next day anyway. This especially applies to journeys involving crossing the Channel.
I am able to sleep on overnight coach rides, I've done it before. For the first few trips I'm probably going to ride on excitement though, which is exhausting the next day.
Oh I did accept it, though the journey home was less easy to accept than the journey there (combination of finding it a bit difficult to be leaving and also traffic jams).
I shall be booking the train next time I think, will try and get a good deal.
It is definitely possible to 'go out' with someone who lives 400 miles away! My boyfriend and I live 650 miles apart (me in Portsmouth UK, him in Ålgård, Norway) and have been together two years. He's moving here to live with my son and me this October. So YES - it's possible to do it, and it's possible to do it well. Good luck to you!
