Northern Lights is my favorite book. Well, it's closely tied with Tom Sawyer. But His Dark Materials absolutely blew me away.

Tolkien - surely there can't be anyone reading this who hasn't read The Lord of the Rings and seen the films? What more can be said, really?

In particular, we young irreverent types decided that Father Jack was exactly like Conor Cruise O'Brien, an ancient Irish politician who was attending the talks as a representative of one of the smaller Unionist groups.

Fair enough. A bloke shouting 'drink, feck, girls, arse!' repeatedly would be worth slightly more than O'Brien's written output of the last two decades or so.

I read Northern Lights because so many people said I should read it, but I think it was overhyped, I didn't think it was anything special.
