Just for the record: it's easy enough, from the clues mentioned, for a modestly diligent library researcher to identify the mysterious "American" who didn't want his name mentioned in the article. He is Jon L. Lellenberg, and the essay collection he edited that Richard Lancelyn Green contributed to is The Quest for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Southern Illinois University Press, 1987).
