Summary: Junhyung spends several months trying to work up the courage to talk to the handsome jogger he sees in Namsan park but one day he stops running and Junhyung finds out why
Junhyung jogs through Namsan park every morning and passes a boy with a black hat and red shoes at exactly 6:07am. The other male is slender built and around the same height with a sloped nose and doe-like eyes. His cheeks are usually flushed a healthy shade of red, his loosely permed fringe slick against his forehead. He’s never seen anyone so breath-taking. They both wear headphones though Junhyung’s heartbeat is louder than the music in his ears.
He wears shorts and a wife beater in the summer. On chillier mornings he’ll wear an un-buttoned shirt. Sometimes he’ll wrap it around his waist or shoulders like a small cape blowing behind him in the wind. In summer he’s an Adonis with golden skin and the hint of muscles beneath his tightly fitted clothes. He’s Junhyung’s own personal hero. Their eyes meet. Sometimes he looks away first, sometimes Junhyung just stares.
When November settles in and brings early snow, the boy starts to wear a black hat. His hair sticks out from under it in thick brown curls and Junhyung adds them to the list of things he likes about the other. The hat goes on the list of things he dislikes - there isn’t much on it, just trivial things. I don’t know his name. I don’t know his age. I haven’t heard his voice. He wants to rip that hat from his head and run his fingers through the other man’s curls.
Three weeks later when December rolls in the curls are gone and Junhyung can only guess that the male has cut his hair. There’s no longer any bangs stuck to his forehead and the hair that curls around the back of his ear is gone too. The man’s cheeks are redder than usual and he seems a little out of breath. Junhyung wonders if he’s getting sick. Another week passes and they’re running in the rain. The stranger’s jacket clings to him like a second skin and Junhyung is startled to see how thin he’s become.
He spends days, weeks, months building up the courage to stop the other and talk. He has all these ideas - they could go jogging together or for coffee maybe. He buys a new tracksuit when it starts to get a little warmer. It’s imported from Italy, navy blue with sequins. He has it all figured out. The boy will notice him and be unable to take his eyes off him. Junhyung will smile at him, that lop-sided grin that Yoseob tells him makes girls melt and then they’ll talk. Junhyung will jog with him, their Ipods will be pocketed and they’ll talk some more. They’ll go for coffee and it’ll all end in soft kisses and promises of forever.
So he puts on his spangly new tracksuit and adjusts the bandana that he always wears around his neck. Today is the day he’ll confess. Only the boy doesn’t show up that morning…
Or the next.
When summer comes back Junhyung falls. He trips on a rock, a twig, nothing. He’s not really sure but damn it hurts. He tells himself it’s nothing and uses the time tested method of heat and ice, alternating between a hot-water bottle and a thawing bag of peas. The swelling doesn’t go down and the bruising only gets worse until Doojoon gets sick of his nagging and forces him to get it checked out.
He steps outside a few hours later. He’s had an x-ray and for now he has to wait for the results. He doesn’t really care what’s wrong with it or even what he’ll have to do. He just wants to know if he’ll be able to run still. The cool air hits him and he pulls his scarf a little tighter around his chin as he digs his phone out of his pocket. Doojoon picks up on the fifth ring. ‘Hyung, It looks like I’m going to be here for a few more hours… No - It’s ok. I’ll just get a taxi. What? No, really I’ll -‘ He spots a familiar black hat and battered red sneakers. A lit cigarette. ‘I’ll call you back’ He hangs up as Doojoon starts shouting.
‘You shouldn’t do that. I thought someone who runs every morning would know better’ Junhyung leans against the wall, watches the way the other man’s shoulders tense for a moment before they droop again. The other male laughs softly. It’s the first time Junhyung’s heard his voice, or seen him laugh and it’s beautiful. The male takes one last draw, savours it for a moment and stubs out the cigarette with his sneakers. He exhales slowly and they both watch as the smoke curls away into the night. ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’ve not run in a long time’. Junhyung watches as a slightly reddened hand reaches up to adjust the familiar black hat. The other male has grown even thinner. He pulls his jacket tighter and strides passed Junhyung and back into the hospital.
‘I thought you’d changed your route or something’ Junhyung speaks to the back of his head. The other male slows a little, digs his hands in his pockets. They don’t say anything as Junhyung wordlessly follows him through hallways and corridors. They go up three flights of stairs before Junhyung notices the once fit male is quickly growing out of breath and after another two or three flights they take the elevator instead. His own ankle hurts, but he pushes through the pain. Hopeful for another chance he missed out on.
They get off on the 25th floor and the stranger goes a little slower, allowing Junhyung to walk beside him. It’s a weird sensation, walking beside the man he wanted to run with. This hadn’t been the way he’d imagined things. Before he knows it they’re outside a door and the male is looking at him expectantly. Junhyung looks around, trying to figure out which ward they’re on but it’s dark and his ankle is throbbing.
There’s a small whiteboard on the door with a single name. It’s a private room. ‘I have cancer’ Says the man. His eyes are wide and scared. They glisten in the light. Junhyung doesn’t want to see him cry. He opens his mouth but the other cuts him off with a cool hand to his wrist. It makes him jump. ‘I started smoking after I got the cancer - figured it would make it things quicker’ He murmurs in a vague kind of way. Junhyung has half a mind to punch this stranger before him. He resists but he’s at a loss for words. The hand drops away and the other lets out a dry chuckle. ‘Goodbye’.
The name on the door reads Jang Hyunseung.
Junhyung brings Hyunseung cartons of ice-cream or orange juice when he visits. The other complains that the deserts are nothing but pastry and the orange juice is diluted. Junhyung brings him two cartons of pure orange juice every time he visits; the expensive kind with real fruit pieces and extra vitamins. Hyunseung usually opens the ice-cream straight away, even though he’s just had dinner and savours the first mouthful as it melts on his tongue. Junhyung is happy to see him putting weight on and the nurses are happy to see him happy.
‘It’s my last one’ Hyunseung says when he greets Junhyung near the hospital gates. The cigarette is almost gone and Junhyung clucks his tongue but he doesn’t say anything and allows Hyunseung to take his last few puffs. It’s not like he really smokes them that often anyways. ‘Why are you suddenly giving up?’ Junhyung leans his shoulder against the high brick wall. He watches in interest as Hyunseung stubs it out and rubs his hands against his jeans. ‘I’ll tell you later’ He murmurs, already eying the bag of groceries in Junhyung’s hand. The younger notices and laughs loudly. He wraps an arm around Hyunseung’s thin shoulders and hugs him tight to his side as they make their way back in.
‘Are you tired?’ Junhyung watches Hyunseung, his eyes slowly falling closed. The other shakes his head, blinks sleepily and tries to keep his eyes open. ‘No, I’m fine. I’ll sleep when you go’ Hyunseung pinches his own arm in hopes it’ll keep him awake. It doesn’t really work. Junhyung laughs and stands up to pull the blankets further over Hyunseung’s slender body. ‘I better get going then. I’ve stayed too long anyways’ It was true. He’d sweet talked the nurses into letting him stay passed visiting hours but it was now nearing midnight and he knew Hyunseung needed to sleep.
A cool hand wraps around his wrist, the once tanned skin pale in comparison to his own. He glances down, the tension suddenly much thicker and glances back to Hyunseung’s face. They’re close - closer than he’d expected and Hyunseung is still just as beautiful as he remembered from the park. Of course he’d never tell him that. Hyunseung would have the nurses throw him out if he did.
He reaches out with the hand Hunseung isn’t holding and strokes his thumb against the other’s cheek bone. ‘Why did you quit?’ He whispers but for what reasons he doesn’t know. Hyunseung’s lip quivers, cheek warm against Junhyung’s palm. ‘Do you really want to know?’ Junhyung isn’t so sure he does but he nods anyways. Hyunseung’s jaw tights, face flushing and he diverts his eyes so he’s looking anywhere but at Junhyung. ‘I realised I have something to live for’ Junhyung opens his mouth to question him but is silenced. ‘You’ The sick man leans forwards, presses his cool lips to Junhyung’s and when he lays back down he closes his eyes and feigns sleep. His face is tense, brows creased and Junhyung stares at him for a long minute. He presses a kiss to Hyunseung’s forehead, chuckling as the other male flinches at the contact and smiles. ‘Good night, Hyunseung-ah’
They sit on a bench under a large sweeping tree and look out over the carp pond in the hospital gardens. ‘I’m sorry we couldn’t run together’ Hyunseung lets go of his hand and rubs his sweaty palms on his sweat pants. Junhyung looks at him in surprise. It’s the first thing the boy has said since Junhyung got there. ‘Why are you apologizing?’ He tries to laugh but it sounds choked and wrong even to his own ears. ‘Stop thinking about the ifs and buts and start thinking about the whens and where’s. Think about when you get out of here and where we’ll go running’ Junhyung tries to smile. He presses a kiss to Hyunseung’s bare shoulder. There’s still a chance that Hyunseung won’t pull through this, it’s small but it’s still there and it still scares the both of them.
‘Do you think you’d have remembered me?’ Hyunseung looks up at him with those large eyes. They’re brighter now and his skin is a little less pale. He doesn’t wear the hat anymore but there’s still a few patches where his hair hasn’t yet started to grow back. A duck waddles across the grass towards them and Junhyung flails it’s arms when he thinks it’s too close. It lets out a loud quack and scurries away. Hyunseung laughs. ‘I’m not sure’ Junhyung answers honestly, picking at a stray thread. ‘For a while, yes. But eventually…’ He trails off for a moment and reaches for Hyunseung’s hand, twines their fingers together. They sit quietly for a while. ‘I’ll remember you now’
