CHARLIE:

There's nothing I can say about Don's situation that won't get me swatted by Amita. Well, there's the 'when did this happen?' but that's about it.

Val's beside herself. Don's pretty cheerful, not looking at all unhappy at what's going on, what with Amita and Val cheerily discussing rings - I'm dead, aren't I?

My brother the newly-engaged and his intended are practicing for the big day now, feeding each other bites of garlic bread. They're laughing more than eating.

"Charlie?" Dad asks me. "Could you help me bring out the main course?"

"I'll be right back," I tell Amita, and follow Dad into the kitchen.

"I ran into Val at the grocery store the other day," Dad starts off with once the door's closed. This is going to be about more than just getting the food, I take it. "She mentioned her mother wasn't doing to well, so I went to visit."

I know better than to interupt him when he's explaining something.

"Terminal cancer, Charlie."

"I'm sorry," and I'm going to tell Val that when I get back out there.

"She's the only family Val has, and she wants to see her daughter married before she dies. And before you ask, I haven't been pushing you or your brother because I'm not going any time soon."

"So you arranged an..." and I can't even say it. I suppose they can divorce later if they want to.

"Yes I did," and he punctuates that the conversation is over, by opening the oven. "Well what do you know, its not burnt."

Let's hope this is an omen, then.
