You do have a point, though. Superman in the movies has had the wrong sort of opposition. Overuse of Luthor, and not looking at other comic options.
It wouldn't surprise me, but it would dishearten me, if Nolan decided to bring back Zod for his movie. Why not Darkseid? Gog? (a time traveled villain from the future seeking to stop the Man of Steel? Sign me up to see THAT movie!)
The article refers to the success of Smallville. Is this a sign of where they want to take the movie? Will they take Superman out of the tights? Will he be going around wearing armor or a t-shirt and jeans?
I wanted to punch the guy who wrote that article for this. Calling Smallville a success is like saying Avatar has an original story. It's a success by the standards of The WB/CW. Of course, their standards are low.
The first three seasons of the show were pretty good. Season 4 even was good, with a noticable clunker* or two. I own up to Season 7, and can't make myself watch 6 or 7 on DVD. And I don't think I can force myself to buy 8 or 9 when it's released.
*: Spell? Seriously?? I cannot watch that episode without the audio commentary track on, and only then because Allison, Kristen, and Erica spend the entirety of it cackling at themselves.
I feel exactly the same way about Dark Knight vs. Batman Begins, for precisely the same reason. The Joker in the Dark Knight was just a psychopath wearing face paint. A nasty psychopath, yes, but missing what makes the Joker different from your garden-variety psycho.

Doctor Octopus would like a word with you, James. ;)
