The Harvey Dent thread in that movie really got to me. Especially in relation to Rachel. I thought it was extremely well written. And the ethical dilemma at the end was excellent. It's good that this movie doesn't have the "feel good, hollywood" tie-it-up-in-a-nice-pretty-bow resolution.

Okay Heath Ledger/Joker.

What I didn't like: He wasn't funny. I wish he was funnier. Okay except for the trick that established his credentials with the mob. (You know the one). That was funny, but the joker needed a few more darksome laughs.

The weird lip licking thing: At first it weirded me out. Then I realized that it was an exaggerated version of the extra pyramidal side-effects encountered by long term treatment of the old anti-psychotics like thorazine or navane. Usually only encountered these days in people 50+ who had decades long residence in the now defunct state hospital system. It took me a while to get it because it was so exaggerated that it was hard to get and that's me so I think very few people probably got it.

What was right: The Joker was an unstoppable force of chaos. No one was able to guess his next move. Several times I thought the movie was ending and it just kept getting more and more unpredictable. Constant escalation. The Joker was anarchy. The Joker was entropy. That part was just incredible.

I had similar issues with the character of the Joker. There was nothing clowny at all about him, he was just a homicidal maniac running around dressed like Beetlejuice.
