what the hell happened with Masque? Part Deux

Nov 08, 2009 08:36

In the message boards for the webcomic, Wendy Pini admits that sales for volume 1 of Masque were "dismal":

(fifth comment down)

I think that's the first time they've EVER admitted anything wasn't hunky dorey with everything. But she's turning that admission around into the "poor me, I'm ( Read more... )

wtf, rant, fail, masque, epic fail, monkeymass, stupid, are you kidding me?!, comics

"Perhaps (like Jekyll and Hyde) Masque is ahead of its time. You're challenging certain American cultural, sexual, and philosophical proclivities, and time may need to catch up to you. I'm sure it will have fans of its own who don't get Elfquest. It's its own child, eh?"

DUDE, these people need to get over themselves so bad.

dang, and I liked that musical too.

This whole thing is just so... tawdry.

And the really horrible thing is that the Pinis were so anti gay, they would flip out if anyone tried to suggest elves might not be entirely hetero... and the original A Distant Soil had almost all the gay references stricken out (I still don't know how the creator managed to slip an Eroica reference past them!) but now they're like "oh look how relevant and socially responsible we are, we are champions of gay rights" and it's absolutely nauseating. It's cynical and manipulative. It's like saying Larry Flint is a champion of gay rights since he featured girl on girl action in Hustler. Does not meet the criteria for Earth Logic, but thanks for playing :-/

They're still playing the "Our elves aren't gay! They're omnisexual!" game too. Convenient that the EQ elves are a culture with no sexual taboos, but who just happen to have a lousy track record with committed same-sex couples.

A billion pardons for the necropost, but I wanted to see what the rest of your thoughts on MotRD were and this level of entitlement...oh, God, where do I start?

How about with a link?

Considering how dismissive Wendy Pini is of the criticisms actual gay men have of her bland, sub-standard, overly air-brushed yaoi she can step right the hell off accusing anyone of homophobia just because they don't find the idea of two emotionally-damaged, anorexic waifs rutting to be all that hot.

But, considering her outright misogyny in that interview, I somehow can't be surprised that she's just that contemptuous of her own fanbase.

yeah, I saw that. If you click on my "masque" tag in the tag cloud you can see I've had awhile to think about this.

I'm also working on a page 25. It's an outtakes page from when this was more review than comparison. Some of the stuff... no seriously. I can't even go there. It must be seen to be believed.

BTW, you want creepy? Check the Cafepress store. They're selling children's and infant's clothing branded with MOTRD designs. Children. Infants. The images have nothing to do with the sexual aspect of the series but just the idea that they put images from a comic that is most definitely NOT child friendly on a line of children's clothing is just... AAAAAAAAAAAAA

Also some of their ad copy: on an infant romper is a line about how "kids are naturally curious so just let them explore" I almost gagged.

Someone else can please look it up and screencap the bejeesus out of the mofo. After three years of this I deserve a break from looking at it.

...I just gagged a little. There is no level on which that is appropriate.
