I only lived in Gibraltar and Soto Grande for about 6 months, but I never really had any issues. makes me wonder how little I immersed myself in the culture...
My roommate is the same way. He just doesn't give me the respect. I told him it's because I'm Asian. It's because I want to keep my carpet from getting dirty, since the lease is under my name and he's only staying for a couple of months. Sometimes, I guess, you have to let things go and say, "At least I tried."
The thought of their dog shit stained shoes on your immaculate floors totally repulses me. But you really can't blame them for leaving their shoes on when you see the condition of their dirty floors. Now the self righteous lecture is another matter. When this guy was pulling back the corner of his eyes was your boyfriend around? When I'm in Spain or Italy, I don't get the "ching-chong" treatment when my boyfriend's around. So yeah, they aren't ignorant and they do know better. I'll send you a box of those shoe covers. I bought a box when I got sick of the ignorant handymen who would leave their shoes on and tramp their muddy feet on my cream carpet.
i never really thought (not wearing shoes in the house) was an asian custom. i assumed everyone did it for sanitary reasons.
ching chong susie wong- the spanish dont have sensitivity towards race- only recently, immigrants from other countries have settled here- so its all very new to them. some have explained- that the spanish love to joke around- and that im the ignorant American that is imposing my PC ideals on them.
It's not an Asian thing, most Aussies do it as well. But the majority of the world's population who do are Asian.
In Spain and Italy I've gotten:
"I can speak china too - ching chong ching chong" "Do you know Jackie Chan?!" "Ninja girl!" "I hate chinamen, I want to kill you all. I have a gun at home. my mother hates you, I should kill you for her" (while my white American friends watched in horror but didn't do a thing since they've never encountered this before)
There are small populations of Asians in certain areas, also in towns with universities for foreigners (language schools basically), there are bigger populations. I find southern European countries to be a lot more nationalistic and hostile towards Asians than northern countries. The Asian population is so small in most European countries, that most Asian families would make special monthly car trips to Paris to buy Asian groceries/food. There are also a lot of Asian markets in the UK, but too far.
i used to get that joke when i was in Second grade- but i never really expected it from grown adults. after the tenth time- ive since given up on mala educada (bad manners/susie wong jokes). its just too frustrating. they probably dont notice me rolling my eyes because theyre just slits.
theres a good amount of chinese markets here in spain. but i cant understand them bcs they speak madarin ching chong- and im the typical abc that knows little cantonese ching chong.
