Personality:
Generally speaking, Derek is just an over all good guy. He’s extremely loyal to those he’s close to and has a thing for protecting people (as seen by: his needing to be there for Hannah, his brotherly concerns for Anya, his dislike of Adrian on Amorisa’s behalf- especially as she doesn’t see it herself-, and his willingness to tutor Camilla even though she’s really not the sort of person he would normally hang out with). Most of the time, Derek is very self-confident. He’s not afraid of embarrassing himself in public and doesn’t get nervous if required to present or perform tasks in front of the class. He knows what he’s good at and what he isn’t and doesn’t tend to make excuses for them. He likes to have a good time, sometimes to the detriment of his school work, but over all he does have a strong sense of responsibility and knows when to take things seriously (and given his friends, he’s often stuck being the voice of reason).
Strengths: Both magical and personality:
Derek is ace at Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts. He finds them absolutely fascinating and actually reads ahead in his free time. He’s gifted with a natural intelligence and doesn’t have to try especially hard to get the scores he wants, which means he’s left with more free time to play around and distract other people. Although he slacks off quite a bit in some classes, Derek knows when to pull it together and performs quite well on final exams.
He’s a very dependable person, is easily concerned for his friends and will do most anything for them. Derek loves to be the person who is there for people, in fact, he kind of needs it. If you’re friendly with him at all and have a problem, he’s the one to go to because he’ll be more than happy to help you with it. He’s not constantly out doing good deeds just to do them, but he won’t hesitate to help people he cares about.
Weaknesses: Both magical and personality:
While Derek can manage most any spell at his level, if he isn’t interested in something, he quickly loses interest. He has a tendency to let himself get distracted and often doesn’t finish assignments for classes not Transfig or DADA. His main failing academically is Charms, not because he doesn’t understand it but because it bores him like nothing else. (And randomly? I’ve decided he loathes Astronomy as well. Just for the record.) Potions can lose him if the particular assignment calls for long brewing periods- again because he gets bored and moves on, generally forgetting to add an ingredient until it’s too late- but over all he does well in that class. Charms is his nemesis.
The whole nice guy bit of course has its downsides. Derek is drawn to people with issues, which of course leaves him open for the fallout when things go wrong. He takes it hard when he can’t fix the things and tends to get upset and moody when they fall apart.

Derek has a rather irrational fear of drowning. He’s alright swimming so long as there are other people around, but if he’s left by himself in the water or lets himself think too much about all that space between him and the bottom he starts to freak out and will probably spend the rest of the day on the shore getting a sunburn.
Practically, his primary fear at the present (and on into the foreseeable plotted future, actually) would be for Hannah. He worries about her recently discovered extended family and what they want with her given that all indicators suggest they’re bad news.
Otherwise, he worries on occasion about his mum on account of her work being dangerous, but most of the time he doesn’t even stop to think on it because Nanine loves her job and has always been very good at it.
History:
Derek is only child of Nanine Faybrooke and Canderous Bly, both former Ravenclaws who met in school and married soon after graduation. His mother comes from an old pureblood family which had already started to diminish (both in status and numbers) well before their only child married a half-blood. The Faybrookes are fairly well off but aren’t the stiff, class-obsessed kind of people many expect to find in a pureblood family, thus their having fallen from some of the higher, more elite pureblood circles years ago. The Blys were a solid, respectable pureblood family up until Derek’s grandfather married a Muggle. Derek’s father is the second of three halfblood children, his older sister Rosayln being a witch, and his younger sister Shelby being a Muggle/squib.
On account of being an only child, Derek got quite a bit of attention from his parents and grandparents growing up. He wasn’t spoiled but he wasn’t exactly left wanting for anything that could be reasonably requested. He has a close relationship with his parents and his Aunt Rosalyn, who Derek thinks is simply brilliant. Due to a lack of siblings and the fact that Rosayln lives quite close, his best friends up until school were his older cousins Marcus and Trav. Derek is less close with his Aunt Shelby who, on account of having been the only non-magical product of a mixed marriage has a strong dislike for all things magic. When Shelby visits for hols (as she very rarely visits any other time) the rest of the family is required to refrain from using magic lest it confuse her children. Derek is of the opinion that Shelby is boring, something that has no doubt rubbed off from Rosayln who has far crueler terms for her sister’s status as a squib. Although he’s not a pureblood, Derek’s family is very firmly wizarding and although he’s probably more familiar with Muggle habits and eccentricities than some, he’s largely unaware of the details Muggle culture and everyday life.

Derek props himself up on his elbows and turns to the arm lying before him. He pushes her sleeve back casually, and maybe a little playfully, because he knows he's perhaps the only person who could get away with doing so. He runs his fingers lightly over the exposed skin, tracing the lines etched into its surface. There is a new one, he notices, just there. After two years, Derek is familiar with the patterns, and there's still a faint pinkness to this one that gives its newness away. A cut Hannah didn't bother to heal, it is slowly fading into her skin by itself.
He understands, conceptually, why she does it, but doesn't really understand. He traces just the one line now, looking up to meet her eyes and speaking quietly, "I wish you wouldn't do that." There is no accusation in the statement. No scolding.
Hannah fixes him with a look after rolling her eyes. It's an old complaint and they both know it's not something she can just stop. He would like to think that she does it less these days than before they were dating, but dares not flatter himself. She does it often enough.
Derek leans down and kisses her scars; it's become a habit, as though he can make up for what she does by loving the skin she destroys. He's oddly attracted to them, the scars, though if he stops to think about it, it seems a ridiculous contradiction, blasphemy, even, to enjoy the product of her self injury. It's part of what makes Hannah, Hannah, however; and for that he can't help but love it. He would protect her if he could.
He meets her eyes, guilty pleasure satisfied, and with an easy smile, picks himself up and leans over her. Derek brushes her dark hair back, letting his hand come to rest against her face.
"Love you," he says quietly.
Hannah's response is to pull him into a kiss, and as hands on from both sides wander to less innocent places, Derek decides the time for cuteness has passed.
