• Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions (I'll also answer more, if asked)
1. You recently had a pipe burst and I can relate as our flat was flooded when the upstairs neighbor's hot water heater exploded. Other than the recent one, have you been party to any other household disasters in your life?
My previous apartment was flooded when a cable guy stepped on a pipe in the attic. Eight apartments were flooded, including mine. I lost my mattress and some books, and some furniture was stained, but I got off very lightly: the musical instruments (which have, among other things, irreplaceable sentimental value) were spared, as were almost all my electronics. I think I lost a battery charger that happened to be positioned directly under one of the places the ceiling gave way.
I had to move to temporary housing (with cat!) for about a month, while they attempted to fix up the place, and then move permanently when they concluded that doing the structural repairs it needed was incompatible with having someone live there. (I would have refused to live there in any case: they refused at first to give up on the carpet, trying various things to dry it, and, having sat in water for a while, it smelled.) The apartment I live in now is almost a mirror image of the one I had before, lacking only a fireplace, but I don't like it as much, somehow. But I'm used to it.
2. Modifying one that you asked someone else...If you had a week off and money to burn, where would you go and what would you do?
London. I would shop and shop. And tour and tour. And see plays and concerts and films. And visit a few places that have meaning to me.
3. What is your favorite song to sing loud and proud during a road trip or in the shower?
This varies. Lately it's been a song I wrote (and need to finish) or else some Cole Porter or Elvis Costello.
4. I know that like myself you have sleep issues. What is the craziest thing you've considered doing to help you sleep?
Doubling the dosage of my sleeping pill. (I didn't.)
5. If you could make any book or play into a movie, which one would you make and who would you cast?
Barbara Trapido's
Brother of the More Famous Jack, probably my favorite modern novel. (I recommend it to all of you: get it at the library if you don't want to buy it.) To quote the narrator: "There is no doubt that it influenced the paths I chose to tread."
I don't know who I'd cast, though. I'll have to think about it and get back to you. Astonishingly, I never considered the question before!
