Help?

I really like knitting and I've done a few projects, but all on circulars or in garter stitch, because I cannot for the life of me figure out how to purl. I've followed instructions from websites, and it always comes out the same if I try to do stockinette. The first two rows look right, but then the third row, when I knit again, ends up with a ( Read more... )

Can you possibly take a picture of your knitting? It might help us to see what you're doing wrong.

The best way I can describe knitting vs purling is that knitting is pulling a loop of yarn towards you through your knitting, while purling is pulling a loop of yarn away from you through your knitting.

Some people do learn better from other people than from books or web sites. Do you have a local yarn store near you? They should be happy to help you figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.

I think I got it now. Sadly, no, the nearest place to me sells yarn and needles, but concentrates on quilting, and my entire family crochets instead.

I taught myself to knit via Youtube, and I found this video to be very helpful in showing what to do clearly and easily :)

(and the rest of her videos are also v. helpful -- all manner of different knitting videos)
