I'm Clouds, from London in the UK. I've been lurking here since the community was featured. I learned to knit on a rainy July day in 2007, and have taken up the needles again as a sort of stress relief/distraction from my Masters degree. I am still very much a novice, as the pictures under the cut will show. (Thanks to rice_dream_girl for prompting me to post ( Read more... )

Just a tip that might help you.. sometimes if I am just making a plain, garter stitch knitted thing (just using a knit stitch), I slip off the first loop onto the right needle instead of knitting it, and then knit all the way down the row. Then slip off the first one, knit, etc. It makes the sides of the square thing a lot more even looking instead of ribbed.

I do the same thing! Except I slip teh last stitch of the row. It makes for very nice and neat edges. The first time I did that I was almost mad I had to sew up the edges for the project...I was proud of my edges, dang it! =]

Well, the good news is that now you have mastered purl and binding off, you can begin making new and complex things. People may tell you to start with a scarf, but my advice is to find a pattern you adore and learn everything else needed for the pattern whilst knitting. If you do start with a scarf, you may get bored and have a better chance of just giving up. knitty.com is a great place to go find patterns, so have it!

Thank you! I think I'll start by buying up some red, orange and yellow yarn and making a Jayne hat...

I'm glad I prompted you - I have little shame when it comes to excitement about learning new things! Also, TRAPEZOID is a much more appropriate word than my 'triangle' description! :D
